Barter Theatre
Forever Plaid
By Stuart Ross
Friday, October 22 - 7:30 p.m.
Thinking fondly of the 1950s and early '60s makes us recall Rock n'
Roll, greasers, hot rods, Elvis, Annette, Fabian and poodle skirts! It
was a time when parents and kids listened and danced to the same music;
when families gathered in front of the TV to watch Ed Sullivan. It was a
period when four-part guy groups harmonized their way across the
airwaves, jukeboxes and hi-fis of the country. They banded together to
sing in the basement for fun, and then would stand in front of a quartet
of microphones and croon a multitude of chaperoned prom-goers into
dreamy romance. They wore dinner jackets and bow ties (or cardigans and
white bucks). Each vocal arrangement soared to stratospheric heights of
harmony. Forever Plaid is the story of such a group. It's February 9,
1964, and four young male singers have landed their first big gig at an
airport bar. On the way to pick up their tuxes they are slammed
broadside by a busload of Catholic teenagers. The boys are given a
second chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the concert that never
was. Singing in delicious '50s four-part harmony, they will serenade you
with Three Coins in the Fountain, Sixteen Tons, Chain Gang, Heart and
Soul, Love Is a Many Splendored Thing and many other songs that will
bring back great memories of those times. This is a funny, feel-good
musical for all ages! www.gmartists.com/shows.htm#foreverplaid

Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company
Wednesday, November 3 - 7:30 p.m.
Enjoy one of the national treasures of the Philippines here at home!
Bayanihan, the National Dance Company of the Philippines, takes its name
from an ancient Filipino tradition called bayanihan which means working
together for a common good. Those involved in Bayanihan are considered
to be national heroes and artists who reiterate what it means to be
Filipino through dance, music, percussion, dress and action. The dancers
are accompanied by live musicians, who share the stage with them as part
of this extraordinary cultural event. Bayanihan debuted at the Brussels
Universal Exposition in 1958, launching their international career. Ed
Sullivan featured them in his telecast of the "Highlights of the
Brussels Fair" seen by 40 million viewers in the US. Since then, the
Company has earned many distinctions: the first Filipino group to
perform on Broadway; the first non-American dance company to perform at
Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts; the first Filipino cultural
group to perform in Russia and to make an in-depth tour of South
America; and the only Filipino dance company to receive the prestigious
Ramon Magsaysay Award for international understanding. Bayanihan
Philippine National Dance Company has awakened a new pride among
Filipinos in their cultural heritage and has added a new dimension to
the country's dance tradition. You won't want to miss this amazing
glimpse into the music and dance of the Philippines right here on the
LCCC campus! www.bayanihannationaldanceco.ph

Montana Repertory Theatre presents
Bus Stop
By William Inge
Monday, April 11 -- 7:30 p.m.
A lot can happen in a single night - particularly in a roadside diner in
a small Midwestern town where a busload of stranded passengers waits out
a howling snowstorm. In this warm and affecting hit comedy, William Inge
examines some of the many faces of love. The timeframe is the 1950s when
a bus out of Kansas City pulls up to the cheerful diner. All roads are
blocked, and four or five weary travelers are going to have to hole up
until morning. Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse in a sparkling gown and a
seedy fur-trimmed jacket, is being pursued by a 21-year-old cowboy with
a ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong
bull. The belligerent cowhand, Bo, is ready to sling her over his
shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to Montana. Even
as she's ducking out from under his clumsy but confident embraces, and
screeching at him fiercely to shut him up, she pauses to furrow her
forehead and muse, "Somehow deep inside of me I got a funny feeling I'm
gonna end up in Montana"... Bus Stop shows that our lives are truly
intertwined; we affect each other in subtle and profound ways as we go
about our daily lives. An immediate commercial and critical success when
it opened on Broadway, Inge's most popular play is full of fascinating
characters. Montana Rep's production is sure to reveal why this is a
beloved American classic. www.montanarep.org

the swingle singers
Monday, May 16 - 7:30 p.m.
Since the release of their ground-breaking debut album in 1963, this
amazing eight-voice a cappella group (complete with their own vocal
rhythm section) have become an international phenomenon and have
performed on the world's most famous stages, sustaining for more than
four decades a level of international popularity beyond the wildest
dreams of the group's founder, American-born Ward Swingle. The
unmistakable sound of "swingle singing" has defined the art form:
virtuosic vocal agility and blend demonstrated by their signature
close-microphone technique, combined with high-level entertainment that
has thrilled audiences around the globe. The current London-based
line-up of young and talented singers is, of course, several
incarnations of "swingles" younger than the original team (Ward Swingle
affectionately refers to them as his "grandchildren"). Their repertoire
encompasses classical, jazz, Latin, pop and rock, all accompanied by
their own vocal rhythm section. The swingle singers have performed all
across the UK, the United States, Asia, and virtually every country in
Europe, have released over 50 recordings, and have won five Grammy
Awards. Come hear them live to fully enjoy their wonderful sound!
