First Grace United Church of Christ is hosting Heads Up Productions and our
version of The Laramie Project. Performances will be held in the sanctuary of
First Grace, located at 350 S. Portage Path in Akron. Performance dates are
Friday, August 13 through Saturday, August 14 and Thursday, August 19 through
Saturday, August 21. All performances are at 8 pm. Tickets are $5 and

you bring 2 straight friends, receive 1 free ticket.)

The Laramie Project is directed by India Burton, whose directing debut, For
Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, was touted
as “absolutely, by far, the best thing I have ever seen in my 10 years at UA,”
by Dr. Boisseau of the History Department.

The Laramie Project is set in the aftermath of the 1998 slaying of Matthew
Shepherd in Laramie, Wyoming. Moises Kaufman and The Tectonic Theatre Project
conducted over 200 interviews with residents of the town, which form the basis
of the play. Sparked by the possibility that Matthew was brutally murdered for
his sexuality, The Laramie Project is a mediation on how a small town deals with
being the epicenter of an incomprehensible crime. The play was hailed by Time
Magazine as “one of the Top Ten plays of the year 2000” and has been called “an
Our Town for the new millennium.”
