About the Show
A rain forest bar and brothel in the brutally war-torn Democratic Repblic
of Congo is the setting for Lynn Nottage's prize-winning play, Ruined. The
establishment's matriarch,
Mama Nadi, both protects and profits from the women whose bodies have become
battlegrounds
between the government soldiers, led by Commander Osembena, and Jerome
Kisemebe's
rebel forces. Christian, a traveling salesman, supplies the bar with goodswhile
attempting to maintain neutrality between warring forces, while Dr. Harari, a
Lebanese
diamond merchant, is a frequent customer. The arrival of two new girls, Sophie
and Salima,
ignites the action, while Josephine, an established worker, protects her turf.
Commander Osembenga'se
soldiers and Jerome Kisembe's forces take turns frequenting Mama Nadi's place
as the tension
builds. The bar's live music and dance serve as a counterpoint to the
ever-present threat of violence.

236 When you come into the theater, you have to be willing to say, "We're all
here to undergo a communion, to find out what the hell is going on in this
world." If you're not willing to say that, what you get is entertainment instead
...of art, and poor entertainment at that..........David Mamet.
