Below the Surface, a thriller in two acts by Canton resident Craig May, is currently available for full-scale production, in return for a minimal royalty fee.

The play was given a staged reading by the North Canton Playhouse in February, to enthusiastic response. The general consensus following was that the story’s power and suspense could only be enhanced by the elements of a fully-mounted performance.

Below the Surface is the story of the Donovans, an upscale family, well-known in their community for their lofty social reputation and generous contributions to charity. Clarissa Donovan (mid-twenties) has invited an old friend, Richard Latimer (mid-twenties), to her home for the weekend. To her consternation, Richard’s visit coincides with her sister, Lydia (late teens, early twenties)’s return from a stay in a mental institution. The girls’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donovan (late forties-fifties), are displeased, to say the least, when they find Richard in their home, as Clarissa did not inform them of his impending visit. The plot thickens when Lydia’s former boyfriend, Paul Trask (mid-twenties), is murdered, and Richard slowly realizes that his presence in the house at the time of the tragedy has left him in a precarious position indeed…for the Donovans will stop at nothing to prevent the outside world from discovering what really lies below the surface of their family’s well-polished façade…

The production requirements for Below the Surface are modest. All action takes place on a single living room set. Wardrobe is present-day. Running time is approximately one hour and forty minutes.

The play’s overall tone is dark, yet infused throughout with sardonic humor. One of the playwright’s main influences in its creation was Lillian Hellman’s classic, The Little Foxes.
