Filmmakers in Person!

Artemesia Gentileschi (1593-1653) was an italian Baroque painter who is now regarded by many as the first great, known female artist. The oldest daughter of painter Orazio Gentileschi (A Caravaggist whose "Danae" hangs in Gallery 217), she is a geminist icon who prevailed over patriarchy despite being raped at a young age by a fellow artist. This afternoon we explore this pioneering woman's life, career, and legacy with a talk, a film, and a discussion. At 1:30 CMA's curator of European paintings and sculpture Jon Seydl will deliver a brief introduction to the artist. Following that, visiting filmmakers Ellen Weissbrod and Melissa Powell will present the Cleveland Premiere of their unconventional new feature film A Woman Like That, a personal documentary that merges a quest for the "real" Artemesia with Weissbrod's own coming-of-middle-age story.

There will be a post-film Q&A with all three experts. Total program 150-180 min.
