Request for Proposals

Cleveland Public Theatre's

DanceWorks 2012

Deadline for submissions is June 20, 2011.

Application and details about DanceWorks is below. For more information or to download application materials, please visit the Cleveland Public Theatre website<http://cptonline.org/news-article-view.php?id=50>.

DanceWorks 2012 is an important part of CPT's 11-12 Season. DanceWorks offers dance companies and choreographers the opportunity to have their works presented in a series with other local dance companies.

CPT will select four or more groups to be part of DanceWorks 2012, which will be housed exclusively in the James Levin Theatre. Each selected group will have access to the James Levin Theatre for one week: Monday through Wednesday for load-in and rehearsal, and Thursday through Sunday for performances. This year's series is currently scheduled for April 9-May 13 2012.

CPT continues to work to maximize the impact of this series while keeping it sustainable organizationally. We want to find the best way to serve presented groups and our audiences while keeping within the limits of CPT's technical staff and resources. The theatre will be set-up with a repertory lighting plot suitable for dance. Companies may alter that set-up; however, they must then take full responsibility for implementing their own set-up and restoring the space for the following company.

Please note CPT will accept applications for shorter works to be included in a shared evening of up to three artists or groups. If you are interested in this option please clearly note this in your application. Groups that share an evening will need to share revenue, rehearsal time, and technical time.

It is up to each project to provide its own artistic collaborators and additional technical staff as needed. CPT will provide an in-house stage manager, as well as box office and house management staff.

CPT produces a direct mail piece advertising all of DanceWorks. However, it is up to the individual companies to promote their own show. CPT will also send out press releases for listings and do what we can to assist and coordinate marketing efforts.

The net box office receipts will be split 60% for the dance company and 40% for CPT; however, each group will be provided with a box office guarantee of $1,000 in advance. (Projects which share an evening will receive a smaller guarantee and a smaller cut of box office.) Ticket prices for DanceWorks have not been set, but typically range from $10-25.

Selection:
The purpose of DanceWorks is to serve established and emerging dance companies and choreographers in Cleveland and Cleveland audiences. DanceWorks seeks to represent a diversity of forms, genres, and aesthetic values. We want to create an environment where companies can boldly experiment and stretch beyond their past repertory. DanceWorks performances should be high quality work. They should be well thought-out, rehearsed and prepared.

Major factors in selecting works are capability, impact, and quality. Companies should demonstrate that they have experienced personnel capable of independently managing your production needs, including sound, lighting, and stage needs. CPT is looking for companies that can organize their needs and resources in an effective way that allows them to be fully prepared. In the application, companies should demonstrate that they have experienced personnel capable of independently managing production requirements including sound, lighting, and stage needs.

CPT expends a great deal of resources to make DanceWorks happen and we want that effort to have the best possible result in the community. We are looking for projects for which DanceWorks will provide a significant impact both on the company that is performing and on our audience.

Because the request for proposal is early this year:
CPT understands that companies may not be able to provide full information on work this far in advance. Applicants may submit a more general application with full info about the company and a preliminary description of work. If necessary, CPT will ask for additional information.

BIG [BOX]
CPT also provides a series called Big [BOX]. This series is especially for premiere work in development. It is set up in a manner similar to Dance Works with only a slightly smaller financial offer. If groups would like their work to also be considered for Big [BOX], please indicate this on the application.
