Directing Devised Theatre Class, FALL 2011

Taught by Raymond Bobgan

Deadline for application is June 15, 2011.

CLASS DESCRIPTION
Directing Devised Theatre (11 week class) will explore many aspects of directing and creating new works including:

 *   montage
 *   dynamic stage picture
 *   working with rhythm
 * creating and working with “actions”
 *   supporting actors’ creative process

The class will meet on Saturdays from October 1 2011 – December 10 2011 (no class on Nov 26 for Thanksgiving holiday). The class will be held 12noon to 3pm. Students may only miss one class and must make up work for that class. This is a working classroom environment and students will be expected to cast, create, and rehearse 4 scenes for in-class presentation. CPT space may be available to students for class work on a limited basis.
Though this class is focused on directing it is open to actors, playwrights, designers, and others who are interested in creating devised work. We are seeking a class with diverse backgrounds and skill sets. Class is limited and enrollment will be based on an application process.
The fee for the class is $750. CPT will accept up to ½ of this fee to be paid in “sweat-equity” volunteer work.
Raymond Bobgan is Executive Artistic Director of Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT), and was recently selected by American Theatre Magazine as one of twenty five artists shaping the future of American theatre. Raymond specializes in devising new plays through an ensemble‐driven process and has created over twenty new performances. Raymond has also initiated, designed, and implemented numerous outreach projects including CPT’s Student Theatre Enrichment Program, a job training program for inner-city teens, Brick City Theatre which offers after‐school arts to youth residents of public housing and the Y‐Haven Theatre Project which engages homeless men, in theatre creation and production. Raymond’s theatrical work has been featured in American Theatre Magazine, Canadian Theatre Review, Theatre Journal, and in Lisa Wolford’s book Grotowski’s Objective Drama Research. His work has been seen in Romania, Brazil, Denmark, Serbia, Turkey, The United Kingdom, and throughout Canada and the US. He was recently awarded an Artistic Excellence fellowship from the Ohio Arts Council and was a premiere recipient of the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture’s Creative Workforce Fellowship, funded by Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.
