GroundWorks DanceTheater Announces “New Works” Fund

Newly created Fund to provide major support of new work commissions,
central to GroundWorks’ artistic mission
GroundWorks DanceTheater has announced the creation of a New Works Fund
which will provide major financial support for newly commissioned works.
At the heart of the Cleveland-based dance company’s artistic mission is
the generation of new work created in collaboration with its artists and
produced and supported here in Northeast Ohio. Now in its 13th season,
GroundWorks has commissioned 19 works by nationally and internationally renowned
choreographers including Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Dianne McIntyre, David
Parker, Gina Gibney, KT Niehoff and Jill Sigman, some of the most creative voices
in the field.
Artistic Director David Shimotakahara notes, “The New Works Fund will
greatly expand the scope of GroundWorks’ new commissions and collaborations and
is fundamentally linked to our artistic future. Every new work is to some
extent an act of faith. We are extremely grateful to Toby Devan Lewis
and Chuck and Charlotte Fowler for their visionary support, for their belief
in and understanding of the value of supporting creative risk. It is the
only way to get to innovation, which is what GroundWorks will continue to
work for and invest in. It is my hope that they will be joined by other
like-minded sponsors.”
This summer, The New Works Fund will help support a multi-media project by
director and choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett in collaboration with
video design artist Adam Larsen, set to music by rock legend Chrissie Hynde of
the Pretenders. Hindsight will receive its world premiere July 15-17 in
performances at Cain Park’s Alma Theatre in Cleveland Heights. This work has
been commissioned with major support from the Chuck and Charlotte Fowler
New Works Fund.
In September 2011, renowned Philadelphia choreographer Ronen Koresh will
begin working with GroundWorks on a new project commissioned with major
support from the Toby Devan Lewis New Works Fund. The work is scheduled to
premiere in February 2012.
