"The Sunshine Boys" unites old friends as old enemies at CVLT
CHAGRIN FALLS - Neil Simon's Tony-nominated comedy *THE SUNSHINE BOYS*
is truly a show-piece for its leading actors, who play a former
vaudeville team called 'Lewis and Clark'. The 1975 film adaptation,
which won an Academy Award and was nominated for three others, featured
the inimitable George Burns and Walter Mathau. When CVLT launches its
production, sponsored by First Federal Lakewood, at its River Street
Playhouse on July 28, the leading roles will be performed by CVLT's own
luminaries Don Edelman and Frank Mularo.
*THE SUNSHINE BOYS* is the story of two aging comedians, Al Lewis (Don
Edelman) and Willy Clark (Frank Mularo). Over their forty-something year
career in vaudeville, Lewis and Clark slowly grew to hate each other.
When Lewis decided it was time to leave show business, Clark never
forgave him. Now it's the early 1970s, and the duo has been asked to
reunite for a CBS TV special about the history of comedy. Clark's nephew
Ben (Stephen Kay) wants the duo to revive one of their old routines for
the show, but his attempt to get the duo peacefully through rehearsals
and the broadcast are hilariously foiled by the cantankerous performers.
Seasoned director Kate Tonti will be directing two Lifetime Members of
CVLT in this production on CVLT's smaller of two stages. Don Edelman is
well known to CVLT audiences both as actor and director and as a past
President of the Theater. He has been at the helm of some of the
theatre's greatest triumphs over the last thirty-plus years, including
the sell-out run of "Kiss Me Kate", the first production of "Man of La
Mancha" outside of NYC, and the recent series of concert/revues with the
Chagrin Falls Studio Orchestra. His acting credits span from 'The M.C.'
in "Cabaret" to 'John Adams' in "1776". Frank Mularo's theatrical career
also spans nearly sixty years and well over three-hundred productions,
professional and non-professional. He has appeared as 'Fiorello
Laguardia' in "Fiorello', 'Tevye' in "Fiddler on the Roof", Ben Franklin
in "1776", 'Nathan Detroit' in "Guys and Dolls", and directed the
national non-professional production of "Man of La Mancha". Rounding out
the cast are Amber Slane and Jackie Cassara as nurses, Jenny Barrett and
Chris White as the CBS Stage Manager and Producer, and Bob Fortlage as
the Patient.
*THE SUNSHINE BOYS *opens on Thursday, July 28 at 8 PM and plays Friday
and Saturday evenings at 8:00 PM through August 13, with a matinee
performance on Sunday, July 31 at 2. Tickets are $10 general admission
and are available at www.CVLT.org, or by phone at 440-247-8955, Monday
through Saturday from 1-6 PM. Group discounts and dinner packages are
available. Complete details on CVLT's upcoming 82nd Season are available
online at www.CVLT.org. Chagrin Valley Little Theatre's River Street
Playhouse is located at 56 River Street in historic Chagrin Falls
Village, across the parking lot from the main CVLT building.
Chagrin Valley Little Theatre is generously funded by Cuyahoga County
residents through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture and is supported by the Ohio
Arts Council.
