So where can you go for a weekend in Ohio and train with the same vocal coach who worked with the woman who played Eva Peron in Evita on Broadway, or the actress who played Janet opposite Tim Curry in the Broadway production of The Rocky Horror Show? How about someone who trained one of the actresses who appeared on Broadway as Mimi in Rent, or Galinda  in Wicked or one of the actors who played Billy Flynn in Chicago? How about someone whose other students have gone on to appear in such Broadway shows as Baby, Oh Coward!, Phantom of the Opera, Hair, The Producers and more, some even receiving Tony and Drama Desk Award Nominations? Or where can you work with a vocal coach who was personally picked by Andrew Lloyd Webber to sing the music of The Phantom opposite Sarah Brightman in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber?

Believe it or not you can train with this celebrated New York City based vocal coach, D. Michael Heath, at the 2011 Ohio Community Theatre Association (OCTA) Conference being held September 2nd-5th in Independence, Ohio. The class is free with full conference registration which also lets you view 15 excerpt presentations from award winning shows around the state (plus two great children’s show excerpts), participate in other great & valuable workshops for actors, techies and theater admins, attend a Sunday evening awards banquets and party, a Friday night theater reception, a Monday morning brunch and more (including seeing displays and theater information from many participating theater vendors).  Visit www.ohiocommunitytheatre.org for your registration form.

D. Michael Heaths workshop is titled Integrating Pedagogy, Warm-Up Practices and Total Body Disciplines in Your Performance, and is being held in two parts (attending both is recommended but not required) on both Sunday evening and Monday morning. It will include ideas on maintaining vocal health, expanding your vocal range and growing your vocabulary of vocal sound. Attendees will learn to integrate a coordinated process of breath, pitch, resonance and whole body disciplines and will get to explore their vocal potential in a wide range of contemporary and classical musical theater styles. More specifically the two classes will be broken down as follows:

Part 1: Sunday Evening (one hour)
Back to the Basics…Understanding Voice Production
Vocal pedagogy covers all aspects of singing.  By understanding basic anatomy, the purpose of vocal warm ups, and the process of flexible sound production, the singing performer is able to more easily adapt his/her instrument to enjoy singing in a variety of styles with confidence and flexibility. Let’s break it down in a way that is easy to understand and use!
·         Human anatomy as it relates to the coordinated process of singing
·         Voice classification, range
·         Breathing and proper support for singing
·         Phonation, Resonance, Vocal Tone & Vibrato
·         Diction, vowels, articulation, & phonetics
·         Posture and physicality in singing
·         Vocal health
Learn how the muscles and organs of your body work together as a coordinated team allowing your body to make sound rather than you trying to force, push, and squeeze vocal sounds out of your body.

Monday / Part Two (Two Hours)
Vocal Practices in Performance...It’s Time to SING!
In this second part of the workshop, OCTA participants will collaborate with D. Michael in a vocal performance master class setting. Following a brief warm up, participants will sing from the musical theatre repertoire while incorporating elements of vocal process presented in Part One’s Back to the Basics. The focus will be to coordinate breathing techniques, elastic resonance connections, and physicality in performance practices.
Some participants will be sought from attendees to be taught the techniques in front of the class.
Each interested singer should prepare two songs of contrasting styles, memorization not required. Singers should bring two copies of the music; one for the accompanist and one to be marked by the singer. Singers may also wish to bring a recording device to record their portion of the workshop.

Visit www.ohiocommunitytheatre.org today to download your registration form and sign up for the full conference (please note that the early bird registration discount deadline has been extended until Aug. 19th). You can also ‘like’ us on our facebook page – OCTA State Conference 2011, to keep updated on the most current details.
