AUDITIONS for THE TEMPEST by William Shakespeare
Farewell to the Factory Theatre

 

Cleveland State University's Department of Theatre and Dance announces
auditions for

William Shakespeare's farewell play, The Tempest.

 

This will be the final production run in the historic Factory Theatre on the
campus of Cleveland State University.

*Because of the long and rich theatrical history of this theatre, we are
opening the auditions for Shakespeare's play to ALL ALUMNI OF THE DEPARTMENT
OF THEATRE, ALL FRIENDS WHO HAVE WORKED IN THE THEATRE IN THE PAST, and of
course to ALL CSU STUDENTS.*

 

The Tempest will be a celebration of over 40 years of Cleveland Theatre. Dr.
Michael Mauldin will appear as Prospero, and the production will be directed
by Allan Byrne, who is known for his innovative use of movement and music in
the staging of Shakespeare.

Audition dates/times:
Tuesday, September 6, 2011 from 6:00pm - 10:00pm
Wednesday, September 7, 2011 from 6:00pm - 10:00pm

Callbacks:
Thursday, September 8, 2011 from 7:00pm - 10:00pm

Place: 
CSU Factory Theatre
On East 24th Street between Chester and Payne avenues in Cleveland, OH 44114

 

Preparation:
Prepare a very short piece of Shakespeare (from The Tempest is fine.) You
may prepare two very short pieces of Shakespeare, but your TOTAL TIME MUST
NOT GO BEYOND ONE MINUTE AND TWENTY SECONDS. Yes, we mean short! Be prepared
to stay for at least one hour to read from the script.

 

Rehearsals:
Rehearsals will begin towards the end of September. The production opens
November 10, 2011 and runs Thursdays through Sundays until November 20,
2011.

 

Performance Dates/Times: 
November 10 - 20, 2011
Show times are 8:00pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:00pm on
Sundays.

 

Summary:
This piece is one of the great plays by William Shakespeare. Known as the
"farewell play", it is a tale of freedom, friendship, repentance,
forgiveness, and temperament. When a storm strikes a royal ship, the party
on board has no idea that this is only the beginning of their adventure, and
that the magician on the nearby island has plans for them.

ALONSO: male / 40s-60s, King of Naples
SEBASTIAN: male / 30s-60s, Alonso's brother
ANTONIO: male / 40s-50s, Prospero's brother, Duke of Milan
FERDINAND: male / teens-20s, Son to the King
GONZALO: male / 50-70, counselor to the Count of Milan
CALIBAN: male / any age, a savage, deformed monster
TRINCULO: male or female / any age, a drunken jester
STEPHANO: male / any age, a drunken butler
MIRANDA: female / teens-20s, Prospero's daughter
ARIEL: male or female / any age, a powerful spirit
BOATSWAIN: male / 20-60, a master sailor
CHORUS (SPIRITS/SAILORS/LORDS)
