New and old music blend at LCCC's Civic Orchestra Concert

A new piece, an old favorite and a classic symphony will kick off the 2011-2012 season of Lorain County Community College's Civic Orchestra.

The Civic Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, October 8 at LCCC's Stocker Arts Center. Music Director Robert Beckstrom, Ph. D., will conduct the performance.

Tickets are $7 for adults; $6 LCCC for staff and students, and $6 for Buckeye cardholders. For more information, contact the LCCC Stocker Arts Center box office at (440) 366- 4040. Tickets may be purchased from the box office from 12-6 p. m., Monday through Friday.

The new piece is North Olmsted resident Dan Shell's "Fantasy for Orchestra." Shell performs in the Civic Orchestra's string bass section and is an accomplished composer whose works have be performed throughout the region. This work has three movements in which he explores a variety of musical moods, from the majestic to the contemplative.

Felix Mendelssohn's "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in E Minor, Op. 64" is an old favorite sure to please. Joining Dr. Beckstrom and the orchestra will be the electrifying Andréa Belding on violin. Last year she dazzled the audience with her interpretation of the "Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto." This year, she will apply her unique vision, artistry and virtuosity to Mendelssohn's concerto masterpiece. Her performance promises to be a season highlight.

The final song will be Franz Schubert's classic "Symphony No. 5 in B-flat, D. 485." This jewel has all the wit and charm of the Haydn of Mozart symphonies, and drops hints of Schubert's admiration of Beethoven. It is a joyous and beautiful piece that will cap off the perfect musical evening.
