Music of the Civil War presented at Kent State University at Stark



The community is invited to attend a historical lecture on The Music of the American Civil War, presented by M.J. Albacete, executive director of the Canton Museum of Art (CMA). The event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre at Kent State University at Stark, 6000 Frank Avenue NW in Jackson Township. This event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.



When the Kent State University Press approached the CMA and Albacete about the possibility of an exhibition of photos and graphic materials to accompany their new publication, Feel the Bonds that Draw: Images of the Civil War at the Western Reserve Historical Society, the staff responded enthusiastically by adding an extensive display of actual artifacts from the community. Inspired by the exhibition, Albacete was curious to find out what the Civil War actually "sounded" like and researched his extensive CD collection of historic American music. From more than 200 recordings, he chose approximately 30 pieces, ranging from popular tunes of the era to lush symphonic arrangements that chronologically survey the diverse emotions of the four-year conflict. The Kent State Stark audience will be treated to a sampling of these selections which reflect the exhilaration of anticipating a "glorious" engagement, humor in the camps, missing loved ones at home, the tragedy of death, the slave experience, victory and defeat and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.



In addition to his work at the CMA, Albacete is also an adjunct professor in Kent State Stark's Art Department, where he teaches on the history of architecture. A long-standing member of the Ohio Humanities Council's Speakers' Bureau, he regularly lectures on a variety of arts-related topics, including the restoration of the Sistine Chapel Frescoes of Michelangelo, the Tomb of Tutankhamun, the Statue of Liberty and various programs on music.
