A Staged Reading of Daybreak’s Children

Heads Up Productions and University of Akron graduate India Burton
announce the launch of a new theatre company, Ma’Sue Productions.
Burton, a long-time member of Heads Up, will serve as the company’s
artistic director.

While working with Heads Up, Burton directed The Laramie Project and
For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is
Enuf, which was touted as “absolutely, by far, the best thing I have
ever seen in my 10 years at UA,” by Dr. Boisseau of the University’s
History Department.

Ma’Sue was formed to give voice to urban culture and to provide
opportunities for actors of color.

A staged reading of Daybreak’s Children, written by Akron playwright
John Dayo-Aliya, will be the company’s inaugural production.
Performance dates are Thursday, November 17 through Friday, November
18 at 8 pm and Saturday, November 19 at 3 pm and 8 pm. Tickets are $12
or pay-what-you-can and available at the door or by calling
330.990.5138. Performances will be held at the Balch Street Theatre
located at 220 S. Balch Street, Akron, OH. The Balch Street Theatre
was recently renovated by the Center for Applied Theatre and Active
Culture (CATAC) and serves as the home for New World Performance
Laboratory.

Daybreak’s Children explores the black experience in present day
America. But it’s a story that surpasses cultural boundaries.
Sammie, the oldest child and only son, has returned to the family home
after the loss of his male lover. Educated at Columbia University,
Sammie is unable to find a job in provincial Memphis, Tennessee. When
Sammie suspects his father of relapsing on his crack addiction, the
family can no longer keep their skeletons in the closet.
