Notre Dame College will host Mercury Summer Stock for a one-night-only performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar” in the Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31.

This ground-breaking rock opera, which reinvented musical theatre for the modern age, will kick-start Mercury Summer Stock’s 2012 season as a benefit for its My First Musical program. The musical tells the story of the last week of Christ’s life with music by Andrew Lloyd Weber and lyrics by Tim Rice.

The zeal with which Christ’s followers are hailing him as the Son of God becomes a source of dismay to his disciple Judas Iscariot. Fearing that this tide of religious fervor will provoke brutal repression by the occupying Romans, Judas must make his fateful choice between faith and betrayal.

The musical is directed by Pierre-Jacques Brault; musical direction is provided by Sean Szaller. The cast includes Troy Hedspeath as Jesus, Joenathan Banks as Judas and Melisa Sills as Mary Magdalene. The cast of 75 includes Notre Dame College students and faculty members as part of the vocal ensemble.

"My First Musical” is Mercury Summer Stock’s educational outreach program designed to give local children (12 and under) and their parents, who may be faced with economic hardship, free admission to each production in Mercury's current season. The experience, which includes educational and artistic interaction opportunities, provides the initial theatre exposure a child needs to foster an interest and passion in the theatre arts for life.

In addition to performing “Jesus Christ Superstar” the day before Holy Week, Mercury will be NDC’s summer theatre company-in-residence beginning in June.

Tickets for “Jesus Christ Superstar” are $25 each, or $40 for two. For reservations or more information, call 216.771.5862 or visit http://mercurysummerstock.ticketleap.com/jesus-christ-superstar/.

Notre Dame College is located at 4545 College Road in South Euclid. The Performing Arts Center is located on the ground floor of the College’s iconic Administration Building.
