The Untamed Actor
A Workshop in
Feldenkrais Method® for Actors

“Feldenkrais has studied the body in movement with a precision that I have found nowhere else.”
Peter Brook, Stage and Film Director

Akron, OH--The Center for Applied Theatre and Active Culture (CATAC) and New World Performance Laboratory (NWPL) are pleased to present “The Untamed Actor: A Workshop in Feldenkrais Method® for Actors,” conducted by area actor and former NWPL company member Terence Cranendonk. The 3 day workshop will take place on Friday March 23, 7-10pm and Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25, 10am-1pm, at the Balch Street Theatre, 220 South Balch Street, Akron OH, 44302. Participants should memorize a short monologue, poem, or text, dress comfortably, and bring a wide, soft mat or blanket for work on the floor. Cost of the three day workshop is $90. Checks or cash accepted. For more information and registration, please call Terence Cranendonk at 330-780-1441.

The art and craft of acting depends on the ability of the actor to allow the unfettered expression of imagination, intention, and feeling in rehearsal and performance. Unfortunately, actors’ habitual muscular and vocal attitudes and typical patterns of behavior often limit what they can realize in actuality. What the actor intends to do on stage somehow is not, or cannot be, expressed fully, or at all. Actor/director/playwright and authorized Feldenkrais Method Awareness Through Movement TeacherCM Terence Cranendonk leads this 3 day workshop in methods to unite the forces of imagination, will, and sensation in the body of the performer, leading to more powerful and expressive work on stage. Through gentle and methodical movement lessons, participants will learn to recognize and unblock habitual movement and vocal patterns. They will learn to establish connections between the impulse, or intention, to act, and the realization of that action in a way that better reflects genuine individual imagination and deep feeling. The actor truly becomes untamed.

Feldenkrais Method Awareness Through Movement® classes have helped performing artists of all disciplines—musicians, dancers, and actors—increase their expressiveness and effectiveness on stage, allowing them to realize their full potential in their art and careers. Renowned director and vocal teacher Kristin Linklater has said that the Feldenkrais Method® allows “the opening up of the body to receive new messages and respond to new impressions without new tensions.”

Through this workshop you can:

 * Change habitual behavior patterns that limit your creative work
 * Decrease the distance between creative impulse and physical expression
 * Improve your flexibility, coordination, and ease of movement
 * Deepen the richness, resonance, and expression of your voice
 * Ease habitual tension on stage
 * Expand limited mobility, allowing for work on more demanding roles
 * Increase your ability to realize your intentions in rehearsal and performance

What is the Feldenkrais Method?

The Feldenkrais Method® is a technique for developing and refining your sensory awareness, through gentle movement exercises, leading to improved overall health and functioning. It is for people of all ages and abilities. Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) lessons are taught in groups, verbally guided by a Feldenkrais practitioner. ATM lessons can result in surprising, even astonishing, changes in function that come about in the process of learning how you move. In the words of Moshe Feldenkrais, the developer of the Feldenkrais Method, “If you know what you’re doing, you can do what you want.”

Terence Cranendonk received his B.A. in Theater Studies from Yale University and his M.A. in Theatre Arts from the University of Akron. He studied acting with the Polish Laboratory Theatre’s Ryszard Cieslak, as well as at the Michael Chekhov Studio, and is a graduate of the Dell’Arte School of Physical Theatre. From 1992 to 1999, Terence was a member of the New World Performance laboratory, whose work has been featured in the Drama Review, as well as in the books Grotowski’s Objective Drama Research and The Grotowski Sourcebook. Terence has performed at the Kennedy Center, Philadelphia’s Plays and Players Theatre, New York’s Public Theatre, Home for Contemporary Theatre, and with Target Margin Theatre, among others, as well as in France, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, and Brazil. He is Akron’s only authorized Feldenkrais Method Awareness Through Movement TeacherCM.
