Willie the Shake’s Greatest Hits:Very Tragical Mirth!

Miller South School for the Visual & Performing Arts presents “Willie
the Shake’s Greatest Hits,” featuring some of William Shakespeare’s
greatest scenes, soliloquies, sonnets, quotes, songs, romances, insults,
compliments, battles and dances, as performed by a cast of 39 students
in grades 4 through 8.In addition, each of the four drama classes (93
students) will join the cast to present choral renditions of four pieces
they have been working on in class.

The cast began working once a week last fall in a workshop format,
learning to speak and understand Shakespeare’s words.Using choral speech
and choreographed actions, the students delved into some of
Shakespeare’s most memorable speeches such as Hamlet’s “To Be or Not to
Be”, Macbeth’s “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”, and Richard III’s
“Now is the Winter of Our Discontent.”

Scenes from Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, King Lear, Hamlet, and A
Midsummer Night’s Dream will be presented along with some entertaining
and educational scenes featuring Shakespearean quotes, insults and
compliments.Under the direction of drama teacher, Wendy S. Duke, the
students helped to research and write the narrative transitions and
scene introductions. The production features technical direction by Tim
“Buffo” Shuff, choreography by Sarah Christman, and live Renaissance
music performed by 7^th and 8^th grade orchestra and band students under
the direction of Doug Bayda.
