 FARM WORKER UNION LEADER SINGS ABOUTLABOR HISTORY AT LORAIN EVENT



Baldemar Velasquez will perform songs and tell stories of the history of
migrant farm worker organizing in northwestern Ohio at a special event at
7:30p.m. Friday, May 11, 2012 at Trinity Hall of Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301
Pearl Avenue, Lorain, Ohio.



Velasquez is the founder and President of the Farm Labor Organizing
Committee (FLOC), AFL-CIO based in Toledo.  FLOC is noted for winning union
contracts with the Campbell Soup Company for workers in Ohio’s tomato
fields and with Mount Olive Pickles for workers in North Carolina’s
cucumber fields.  FLOC is currently engaged in an organizing campaign
targeting Reynolds Tobacco on behalf of North Carolina tobacco field
workers.



The program in Lorain, “An Evening with Baldemar Velasquez – Labor History
Through Song and Story” will feature Baldemar Velasquez and the Aguila
Negra band performing original labor and civil rights songs in a “Tex-Mex”
folk music style that will inform and entertain at the same time.



The event is hosted by the Lorain County Labor Agency and is sponsored by
the Lorain County AFL-CIO, the Lorain Labor Festival Committee, and the
Labor Committee for Latin American Advancement.  Food and beverages will be
available.



Admission is $10 with free parking. Tickets can be reserved by calling the
Lorain Labor Agency at 440-282-7401.
