AUDITION APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Auditions for ”The COLOR PURPLE are BY APPOINTMENT ONLY (in 10 minute
intervals). Please write to karamuaudtions at gmail.com to make an audition
appointment. Specify name, date and window of availability and we will email you
back with a specific appointment. Also, people without an appointment who drop
in at auditions will be placed on a Standby List.While we will try to get as
many stand-bys in as possible, we do not know how many—if any- Stand-bys will be
able to audition on any given day and may or may not be seen. E-mails will be
handled on a first come first served basis.
AUDITION DATES & CRITERION
JUNE 14, 2012 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM SINGERS ACTORS EQUITY ONLY
JUNE 15, 2012 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM DANCE NON-EQUITY
JUNE 16, 2012 2:00 PM – 5:00PM SINGERS NON-EQUITY
Please prepare 16-32 bars (1-2min) of music of your choice, preferably in the
soul, blues, gospel, or musical theater genre. Please bring sheet music for
piano accompaniment. No monologue preparation is necessary. Sides with be
provided at the audition. For the Dance auditions, please come prepared for
movement and be ready to dance barefoot (if required).
All who are Auditioning must bringa current resume and non-returnable 8x10
headshot photo. This is a must……….

ABOUT THE PLAY
From the classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, and the moving

story of hope, a testament to the healing power of love, and a celebration of
life.
ROLES AVALIABLE: (descriptions copied from published script)
CELIE:
Female, insecure yet spirited, appears meek and timid but has a tough interior,
has been told she is ugly and thinks so, has a sense of humor, treated poorly
for many years, she finds love and confidence to become an independent thinker,
strong, passionate, singing voice, lead role.
MISTER:
Male, real name is Albert, an outwardly attractive, dominant male presence,
disrespectful, demanding and abusive of people in his life, marries Celie, out
of necessity and mistreats her, true feelings are for Shug, realizes his errors
and tries to make amends, strong vocalist with power.
OL' MISTER:
Male, Mister's stubborn father, outwardly demeaning, disrespectful, and
constantly puts down his son. He has never approved of Shug Avery or his son's
relationship with her.
SHUG:
Female, a well known singer, very charismatic, a sexy, confident and powerful
female presence, irresistible to all , loved by and comforting to both Celie and
Mister. Call-back sides:
SOFIA:
Female, powerful, humorous, independent warrior woman, physically larger with a
presence to match, comfortable and confident in her own skin, uses her
sexuality, married to Harpo, will not accept mistreatment.
HARPO:
Male, Mister’s vulnerable, good-natured son, marries Sofia, torn between what he
learned from his father and what he is learning from Sofia, learns to treat
women well and becomes successful with his business.
NETTIE:
Female, an adventuresome, spunky and educated young woman, has a strong,
unbreakable bond with her older sister, Celie, separated from Celie by Mister,
she finds a new life and calling in Africa.
SQUEAK:
Female, Harpo’s girl after Sofia leaves and until she returns, spunky, fun and
sassy, opinionated and not easily intimidated, soprano capability.
CHURCH LADIES (DARLENE, DORIS, JARENE):
Big, strong personalities and presences, character women who are the busybodies
of the town, they see everything and comment on everything, all different types
and ages, singers with comedic flair;
ENSEMBLE SINGER/DANCERS/ACTORS:
Males and females, all physical and vocal types, actors, dancers, and strong
personalities to play many multiple ensemble roles.
CHILD SINGERS:
3 African American males 9-12 years old and 3 African American females 9-12
years old.
REHEARSALS
There will be 9 weeks of rehearsals,On weekday afternoons or evenings, and
weekends - mornings, afternoons or evenings 3-6 times per week, mainly in the
evenings.
