“Just So” Musical Explains Animals' Individualities

The Broadview Heights Spotlights Community Theater’s youth production of Just So
will run June 21 –July 1, 2012. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances are
at 7:00PM; Sunday Matinees begin at 3:00PM.

Based on the work of Rudyard Kipling, the musical is a clever and powerful
interweaving of the Just So Stories. While following the Elephants Child on a
journey to stop the Crab from playing with the sea, the story creatively
answers such questions as “How did the elephant get his trunk?”, “How did the
leopard get his spots?”, and “Why does the Kangaroo have such powerful legs?”
With hummable melodies and memorable characters, the show has uplifiting and
powerful messages about self-courage, friendship, and acceptance.

The show’s authors, George Stilles and Anthony Drewe—the same team that composed
the popular Ugly Duckling musical, Honk!—spent twenty-five years composing and
revising the show, which originally premiered in London and has had several
reincarnations at various theaters around the United States.

Tim Anderson, Education Director for the Spotlights and is one of the show’s
co-directors, noted, “In past years, we have chosen abridged shows specifically
designed for young performers. This year, we ambitiously decided to stage a
full-length musical intended to be performed by adults. Already, the cast has
risen to the challenge with only the slightest adaptations.” Maggie Majercik,
a veteran of the Spotlights’ stage who began in the youth productions several
years ago, is also co-directing the show.

The cast features fifteen talented local performers, ages 9 to 17, including
Elizabeth Coleman, Jordan Cree, Corey East, Lexi Frendak, Dylan Grosh, Emily
Johnson, Charlie Jones, Claire Leff, Chrissy Margevicius, Kamal Raslan, Curt
Sprunger, Ian Stewart, Lindsay Tryon, and Nathan Weagraff. Anderson also
appears on stage in a cameo role as the Eldest Magician.

Tickets are $11 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. Reservations may
be made on-line at www.broadview-heights-spotlights.org or by calling
440-526-4404.
