Playwright Mark Dunn would like to introduce you to the Walker sisters
of Tennessee in his comedy, BELLES. Since the death of their father,
they have spread out across the USA and now reside in Memphis, TN.;
Philadelphia, PA; Atlanta, GA; Collierstown, MS; Elk Run, WA.; and
Austin, TX. Over the course of one weekend, the six of them make dozens
of phone calls to each other, which audiences will be invited to listen
in on when BELLES opens at CVLT's River Street Playhouse on August 10
for a three-weekend run.
Peggy, the eldest sister (Yvonne E. Pilarczyk), has become their
mother's caretaker, and she calls each of her sisters to inform them
that Mama's been hospitalized after eating some bad tuna. Aneece (Denise
Larkin), the antisocial banker in Philadelphia, struggles with building
and maintaining relationships with Mama and her other sisters. Audrey
(Jenny Barrett) is a fledgling ventriloquist whose life takes a turn for
the worse when her dummy goes missing. Roseanne (Claudia Lillibridge), a
minister's wife and mother of two, finds herself in the midst of a
crumbling marriage. Then there's the sister whose name keeps changing:
Sherry "Dust" Walker (Sarah Doody), the New Age yoga and tofu-eating nut
job. Lastly, there's Paige (Macey Staninger), the baby of the family,
who is a graduate student studying Chaucer with her eyes on "Mr.
Perfection." Their phone calls lead to comedic and often brutal
confrontations about the past and present.
