Shaker Heights, OH, 29 October 2012 – Shaker Theatre proudly present its Fall Main Stage play, AS YOU LIKE IT, by William Shakespeare, December 5-7 at 7pm in the Large Auditorium at 15911 Aldersyde Drive, Shaker Heights, OH 44120.

In keeping with its long-standing co-curricular Shakespeare learning program Shaker Theatre ensures that every student has the opportunity to participate in a full Shakespeare production. This year, a company of 90+ students and adults is coming together to create AS YOU LIKE IT, one of Shakespeare’s most musical and romantic comedies.

To commemorate the centennial of the incorporation of the city of Shaker Heights, we’re taking the 16th century French Court and reimagining it in 1912, in a place not unlike Shaker Heights. This production of AS YOU LIKE IT will be one of the most unique ways for the community to visualize what we looked like 100 years ago.

You will also surely be taken by the gender bending antics of the character Rosalind, one of western literature’s most notable heroines, as she disguises herself as a man and instructs Orlando in the ways of love. Add Shakespeare’s poetry and wit, his nobles and clowns, and shepherds and fools, wrestling and dancing, and as the title suggests, there is something for everyone. Not to mention the lights and set, the costumes, the players, and all of the unseen hands that pull it all together and keep it running.

Directed by Department Chair Christine McBurney, the production features students in a variety of roles: performers, musicians, designers, technicians, producers, and fundraisers. The adult team includes Erik Johnson (Co-Producer), Chuck Tisdale (Technical Designer), Wendy Kriss (Choreographer), Pauline Thornton (Dramaturg), Bruce Jennings (Composer/Arranger), Inda Blatch Geib (Costume Designer), Barrie Sandman (Box Office Manager), Evangeline Ramsay (Shaker Theatre Support Liaison) and Brendan O’Connell ‘12 (Stage Manager).

Thanks to a generous grant from the SHHS Class of 1950-51, director Christine McBurney was able to apply to and accept a spot at The Juilliard School’s first ever “Hands on Shakespeare Directing Workshop” in New York City last summer, and is now enthusiastically passing on newly learned rehearsal techniques to the cast.
