This one act opera by Menotti was commissioned by NBC and first performed on December 24, 1951 at the NBC studio in Rockefeller Center. With an English libretto by the composer, it was the first opera specifically composed for television in America.

The opera features Soprano Marla Berg as the Mother, Sam Culver as Amahl, tenor Tim Culver, baritone Brian Johnson and bass Cyrus McFarlin as Kings.

In the spirit of the holiday traditions which this work celebrates, admission is free with a donation of warm clothing or outerwear, or a monetary contribution which will be sent to The City Mission.
