Celebrate the Year of the Snake with a performance of traditional Chinese music by the Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble, part of the Massillon Museum's Rhythms Concert Series.

The program, entitled "Subtle Fragrance: A Concert of Classical Chinese Music and Poetry," will feature festive pieces in honor of the Chinese New Year, as well as evocative solo and ensemble pieces, played on instruments including dizi and xiao (bamboo flutes), sheng (mouth organ), guan (oboe), erhu and yehu (fiddles), pipa (pear-shaped lute), guzheng (zither), gongs, drums, and other percussion instruments. The ensemble will be joined for several selections by vocalist Min Li (李敏), a graduate of the Wuhan Conservatory of Music in Hubei, China.

Interspersed between the pieces will be readings of classical Chinese poems (in both Chinese and English), and performances of Chinese martial arts (taiji sword and Seven Star Praying Mantis-style wushu) by Shifu Gary Harris of the Center for Body-Mind Harmony of Tallmadge, Ohio, with live musical accompaniment.

The program will also feature a rare performance of "Subtle Fragrance" (An Xiang, 暗香) a poetic song composed over 800 years ago by the Southern Song Dynasty composer Jiang Kui (姜夔).

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the performance starts at 7:00 p.m.
