ON GOLDEN POND

Auditions

WHEN:Sunday, April 21 – 2:00pm-4:00pm + Monday, April 22 – 7:00pm-9:00pm

CALLBACKS: If necessary, on Wednesday, April 24 – 7:00pm-9:00pm. (Actors
called back will be so notified by e-mail or phone no later than 6:00pm
Tuesday, April 23.)

WHERE: Workshop Players

WHAT TO PREPARE: Two (2) contrasting monologues that can be presented in
no more than five (5) minutes total.

WHAT TO BRING: An acting resume and a semi-recent headshot, if you have
them, PLUS a list of any and all conflicts to the tentative rehearsal
schedule below.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN: Upon arrival, auditioners will complete an audition form
and, if necessary, have their picture taken. Auditioners will present
their audition monologues and then we will read from sides from the play.
If more auditioners come, we’ll see more monologues and then do some more
reading from sides.

SCRIPTS: Most libraries have multiple copies of this script. It can also
be easily purchased from Amazon or any other online bookseller. Local
bricks-and-mortar bookstores, however, will not likely stock this title.

NOTE: You are urged to NOT NOT NOT view the motion picture. Seriously.
Once you get those actors(and their line readings) inside of your head,
you may find yourself, consciously or un-, imitating their performances.

QUESTIONS: Email to wspauditions at gmail.com.

Director Kevin Kruse is looking for the following

The following character descriptions are meant to serve as a starting point
for the actors’ own analysis and interpretation. They should not be
construed as what the director is necessarily "looking for."

Norman Thayer, Jr. (80ish) -- Norman is a retired college professor who
describes himself as being "older than dirt." He has a dry wit and enjoys
having fun at others' expense. Norman is flirting with senility and is
aware of it enough to use it to his advantage, usually in a humorous way,
while using his intellect to mask his growing infirmities. He is a
curmudgeon, as he feels his age entitles him to be. He is very much in love
with Ethel, but he doesn’t quite know what to do about their daughter,
Chelsea.

Ethel Thayer (70ish) -- Norman's wife. Ethel is a spritely, active woman
who loves her husband completely and who is in love with simply being
alive. She fills the empty spaces when Norman grows quiet. Since they
met, Ethel has rounded the rough edges of Norman's personality.
Intelligent and well grounded, she has been content to defer to Norman on
many issues yet still maintain her own identity.

Chelsea Thayer (40-50ish) – Attractive, divorced, and living in California,
Chelsea is the only daughter of Norman and Ethel. The nervous type, she
has a difficult relationship with her parents. She has never gotten along
with Norman, although as a child she went to great lengths to win his
approval, and she feels that Ethel always takes Norman's side of things.

Charlie Martin (40-50ish) -- A native of Golden Pond, he’s the Thayers’
mailman. Growing up, Charlie was fascinated by Chelsea, the pretty
and mysterious
city girl, as he continues to be in adulthood. Charlie is helpful, sincere,
and sociable, although he has never married. Charlie laughs a little too
often and does not understand the subtlety of Norman's sarcasm, although he
is drawn to Ethel's hospitality.

Bill Ray (40-50ish) – Attractive, with a good smile. He tends to be on the
serious side, but he does have a good sense of humor when he remembers to
use it. Bill is an intelligent and honest person who confronts issues in a
straightforward way. When Norman tries to intimidate him, Bill stands up to
him and wins Norman's respect. The California dentist to whom Chelsea is
engaged, father of Billy.

Billy Ray (13) -- Precocious and worldly for his age. Billy is
intelligent, but suspicious and guarded. At this point in his life, he has
not spent a lot of time with his father, or any male role model. Billy
recognizes that he has been passed back and forth between his parents out
of necessity, but has not really been "raised" by either of them.
