Crowns, a play by Regina Taylor, opens at Karamu House on May 24, 2013 in Karamu's Jelliffe theatre at   8:00 pm and runs through June 16, 2013.  Crowns is a not-to-be-missed celebration of song, dance, cultural history-and glamorous headwear.
When Chicago-born Yolanda is sent down South after the death of her brother, she finds strength in the tales of the wise women who surround her-and the powerful rituals connected to their dazzling hats. This jubilant musical traces the roots of Gospel through contemporary hip hop, fusing rich storytelling with abundant "hattitude" into a stirring coming-of-age tale. Karamu Artistic Director, Terrence Spivey, who directed this seasons The Color Purple is director of this production.
Crowns features area singers and musicians who've entertained Greater Clevelanders in previous Karamu productions of Black Nativity,  God's Trombones and The Color Purple are led by Musical Director, Mrs. Sharolyn Ferebee.  The talented cast members are Imani Jackson, Christina Johnson,   Nina-Jones Respress, Nathan Lilly, Joyce Linzy, Cherie McElroy-Burch, Lauren Nicole Sturdivant, Understudies Antoine Dawayne Burts, ShaRon Yvonne Webb with dancers Dominique Paramore and Jonah Latham.
Performances are Thursday thru Saturday at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 3:00 pm
Ticket prices are:   Thursday and Sunday $25.00; Friday and Saturday $30.00
Student discount  $4.00 off ticket prices; Senior discount (62+) $3.00 off ticket prices
Preview night May 24th has been sold out!
