The Waverly Gallery – a heart-rending, poignant and often hilarious comic drama that examines the effect of senility on a family. The production is presented in Weathervane’s intimate John L. Dietz Theater between Oct. 31 and Nov. 16, 2013.
Written by Kenneth Lonergan, The Waverly Gallery takes place in New York between the years 1989 to 1991. The play’s central character is Gladys Green, an “eighty-something” former lawyer and Greenwich Village activist who runs an art gallery in a small hotel.
The hotel’s management would prefer to replace her less-than-thriving gallery with a potentially more lucrative coffee shop – but the fiesty Gladys isn’t someone who backs down easily.
Always slightly cranky but now increasingly unpredictable due to her descent into Alzheimer’s disease, Gladys becomes a cause of concern to her daughter and son-in-law – and in particular to her grandson, from whose point of view this touching “memory play” unfolds. As Gladys fights to retain her independence, her decline impacts her family in profound ways.
Simultaneously heart-breaking and hilarious, The Waverly Gallery shows how a family can confront a crisis with both humor and strength.
The Waverly Gallery plays in Weathervane Playhouse’s John L. Dietz Theater between Oct. 31 and Nov. 16, 2013. (The Dietz Theater is Weathervane Playhouse’s intimate, 48-seat “second stage” within its Weathervane Lane facility. Seating is limited.
The preview performance is Thursday, Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m.; the official opening-night performance is Friday, Nov. 1 at 8 p.m.
Between Oct. 31 and Nov. 16, 2013, performance days and times are Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Additionally, there will be one Saturday matinee on Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets for all performances of the play are $18 each. Tickets for college students are $5 each. The 48-seat Dietz Theater features general-admission seating only.
Due to mature themes and some adult language, The Waverly Gallery is recommended for adult audiences.
