Changes to IP Leadership

Peter Balint

Independent Pictures has undergone some changes recently. Bernadette Gillota has
stepped down as artistic director. She founded the organization in 1993 and has
grown it into the successful organization it is today. Peter Balint has been named
as the incoming executive director. Peter brings many years of experience in the
areas of filmmaking, IT, and project management-most recently at Cleveland Clinic.
He intends to find novel ways of engaging the filmic community in Cleveland in the
process of expression through film. In addition to these operational changes, Independent
Pictures also named the long serving Therese Grida as board president and welcomed
Matthew Dilts-Williams as a new board member. The organization remains committed
to continued growth, better engagement and, of course, bringing you the very best
independent films at the annual Ohio Independent Film Festival.

Exploitation Film Classics Waterloo Arts
The popularity of our December 2013 screening of Maniac (1934) has prompted us to
dig deep into our vaults and unearth more exploitation classics. The so-called "educational"
aspects of these films allowed the depiction of taboo subjects that were prohibited
by The Motion Picture Code. Watching these films today is a real hoot! They are
best enjoyed as a group activity.
The second film in this series is The Cocaine Fiends (1936, 60 Minutes) and will
 screen [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001FAdCbHZAyAABJ22wkBr1qHaRExIo7MhPkgwKgR2x9AU1hHqE3fEPPMARcYUEwgQJJ_wTsbBTDk0rM7yU0fY_vJSEKoshKc9qTsLl9WbWgds3kwKc2V8Ihe-zugik4jLhCJFkz-B4ANsqeQvAprrUzf1591i61lQk5LaSOrIqO46qsq4hGiGEsNb4pUTQLqneqqwyJqFoAGsdEY5MAQuhag==&c=UGoMT74_bJECM6SFAMdT4GbQNl7muHLxco4TF-qTqqpY50qJK1Dz6g==&ch=74LDXMh-bB5n_HJEmv_oMxAlRiS4BNHbPSRy7UitCDhkPXkGhMxlsA==]
on April 4th at 8:00 PM at Waterloo Arts (15605 Waterloo Road in Cleveland) The
Cocaine Fiends, Directed by William A. O'Conner, is about a small town girl who
is offered "headache powder" which turns out to be cocaine. The moral of the story,
do not sniff white powder. Come on down and have a blast! Admission is free!!!!
Enter the cafe at the corner of East 156th Street and Waterloo. This program is
hosted by Todd Michael Kwait and Robert Banks of Independent Pictures.

STOMP! SHOUT! SCREAM!

The beach party rock n' roll monster movie STOMP! SHOUT! SCREAM! will be screened
on Saturday, afternoon, April 5, 2014  [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001FAdCbHZAyAABJ22wkBr1qHaRExIo7MhPkgwKgR2x9AU1hHqE3fEPPMARcYUEwgQJuCfCZ-lk9DK1nYIZSOY9wMDrOt5lw4Ptlq2B9JHP2KxfndKoD9Em8zQQTpA9I8aBtQ_WBN_pCt8-F5uOxGcrSRGlFKSVXQT969RGxAqb_YruJenkpReE9FGi_yUNLVgmm7bPqrsXPmLfqq35xD3KvA==&c=UGoMT74_bJECM6SFAMdT4GbQNl7muHLxco4TF-qTqqpY50qJK1Dz6g==&ch=74LDXMh-bB5n_HJEmv_oMxAlRiS4BNHbPSRy7UitCDhkPXkGhMxlsA==]beginning
at 1:00 p.m. at Atlas Cinemas Lakeshore 7, 22624 Lakeshore Boulevard in Euclid.
Tickets are $9.00 at the door. Cartoons, old trailers and short subjects will be
included to replicate a bygone Saturday matinee experience. The film is not rated,
but is designed for audiences over 12 years of age.

Independent Pictures, the host of the annual Ohio Independent Film Festival, periodically
reviews its past submissions in order to showcase overlooked, independent films
with a Cleveland connection. Stomp! Shout! Scream! was produced by Professor Evan
Lieberman, of the Cleveland State University Film and Digital Media Program. Professor
Lieberman also served as the film's cinematographer. STOMP! SHOUT! SCREAM! was
produced as if it were being made in 1966 - without parody, without condescension,
without any retrospective irony. Everything from production design, to acting styles,
to original songs and score was created as if the film were a lost classic of the
genre.

Professor Evan Lieberman shot the feature on 35mm with the look of the 1960s beach
party films - unnaturally bright, primary colors for the characters and locations
that contrast with the dark, grungy look of the Skunk Ape. STOMP! SHOUT! SCREAM!
references the style of the great Floyd Crosby (father of rocker David Crosby)
who shot the original beach party films of the 1960s for producer/director William
Asher," said Lieberman. "Crosby used a simple yet dynamic sense of movement and
an unusual degree of color saturation to create a playful sense of space that expressed
the innocent fun and bright optimism of the time period before American youth culture
descended into the more conflict-ridden psychedelia of the hippie era." STOMP!
SHOUT! SCREAM! was directed by Jay Edwards who has been making independent films
since 1996. This film is brought to you by: Cleveland Camera Rental [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001FAdCbHZAyAABJ22wkBr1qHaRExIo7MhPkgwKgR2x9AU1hHqE3fEPPMARcYUEwgQJEPqEqHTiBIJ9O9B72XeYPrVtJTi9-Jc-pF50GsIYv7FtLM9jRPAAygPqi_qhrRsMPoBYFffeXEBXxZ4hPDbY6WyWjd03Xw4dGts4-qTS1XbgZ39Ror9fwSR19B2iKiEm&c=UGoMT74_bJECM6SFAMdT4GbQNl7muHLxco4TF-qTqqpY50qJK1Dz6g==&ch=74LDXMh-bB5n_HJEmv_oMxAlRiS4BNHbPSRy7UitCDhkPXkGhMxlsA==],

at Arts Collinwood followed by a live performance by Bobby Bare Jr. just around
the corner at Beachland Ballroom and Tavern. The film is an intimate "fly on the
wall" documentary about iconoclastic rocker Bobby Bare Jr., son of country music
legend Bobby Bare, and his struggles dealing with the repercussions of a perpetual
life on the road-the constant separation and the disconnect from loved ones back
 home.

Musicians including My Morning Jacket, Justin Townes Earle, Hayes Carll, David Vandervelde,
Blue Giant, Duane Denison, Carey Kotsionis, and Bobby Bare Sr. make appearances
in the film. The film's director, William Miller and Bobby himself will be on hand
to answer your questions. This is a unique opportunity to take an in-depth look
at the artist and engage with him on many levels. Ticket information is forthcoming
