*ROUGE ÉTUDE or HOW SHERLOCK HOLMES BECAME A MISOGYNISTby Deborah
MagidDirected by Brian Pedaci*

It is a rare joy as an actor to work in collaboration with a playwright and
director on the development process that brings a new play to life. For
this work, that process will involve sporadic rehearsals as required in
preparation for an on-camera table reading at Cleveland Play House and a
staged reading October 27 at Dobama Theatre; more regular rehearsals begin
in January and culminate in workshop performances February 12-14 at
Cleveland Public Theatre’s Big Box ’15.

Ever wonder why Sherlock Holmes was a misogynist? or, at least, exceedingly
wary of women? Ever realize that he’s hugely enamored of a woman in the
first book in Conan-Doyle’s canon, A Study in Scarlet? She’s violinist
Wilhelmine Norman-Neruda, an actual, historical figure who broke through
the stricture that it was unseemly for women to play violin in public, and
was lauded as the finest violinist of her day. In this four-actor work, the
playwright imagines and explores Holmes’ passions all the way back to their
sadomasochistic sources.

This play requires actors comfortable with heightened language.

Characters:
*SHERLOCK HOLMES* (male, 24) At the earliest point of his career, already
obsessively observant yet still vulnerable.
*WILHELMINE (Wilma) NORMAN-NERUDA* (female, 50) A woman of presence and
intellect. Married but of independent mind and means.
*MRS. HUDSON* (female, 50s-70s). Holmes’ landlady. Unsophisticated, direct,
and humorous.
*STRAD* (female, ageless) – The personification of Holmes’ Stradivarius
violin and the apex of the romantic triangle. Lithe and graceful, this role
is both movement- and language-intensive.
