CLEVE REVIEW: Equity Production of 'Heartbreak House'  
Finds a Home in the Cleveland Theatre Community





This current production of Heartbreak House is unique in the fact that local members of Actors’ Equity Association have taken matters into their own hands and self-­produced the play under the union’s Members’ Project Code. And their efforts more than pay off. This is a work that is rarely presented, and yet has lots to say on the subject of relationships between the classes as well as the sexes. 

Director Bernadette Clemens has staged the action with a heightened sense of urgency permeating throughout each scene. By the time the show reaches its dramatic conclusion, she and her actors really make us care about each of the characters. Clemens is also Co­-Artistic Director of Mamaí Theatre Company, who has provided a fine and fitting home to this House.

The entire ensemble embraces and embellishes the mismatched menagerie of lovers and friends. Each role is performed with relish and vigor, accents are sharp, diction is clear, The stellar cast includes Terence Cranendonk, Paula Duesing, Mitchell Fields, Thomas Q. Fulton, Jr., Anjanette Hall, Dana Hart, John Hedges, Laura Perrotta, Juliette Regnier, and George Roth…
