The Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble, Northeast Ohio's traditional Chinese orchestra, will perform a 1-hour set (from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m.) as part of the "MIX: Pathways" event being held by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, in conjunction with the Cleveland Museum of Art, on the evening of Friday, September 5, 2014. The ensemble's performance will take place on the lawn directly in front of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Following the theme of the CMNH's "Traveling the Silk Road: Ancient Pathway to the Modern World" exhibition, the ensemble will present a diverse and colorful program of pieces related to silk, silk production, and the Silk Road, with some pieces played using musical instruments outfitted with actual silk strings. The program will also include a rare performance of one of the oldest surviving pieces of Chinese music: a Tang Dynasty pipa score from the early 10th century, discovered nearly a century ago in a cave at Dunhuang in Gansu province, along the Silk Road in far northwestern China.

Instruments will include dizi and xiao (bamboo flutes), guan and suona (oboes), sheng (mouth organ), erhu (fiddle), dahu (bass fiddle), pipa (pear-shaped lute), yueqin (moon lute), guqin (7-stringed zither), gongs, drums, and other percussion instruments.

The event will also feature authentic belly dance by Troupe Shabaana, as well as many other activities related to the Silk Road and Yoga, inside both museums as well as on the pathway between the museums (which are across a lawn from one another). There will be a cash bar as well as food available for purchase.

Admission to the event (which is open only to those 18 and over) is $10 in advance or $12 at the door for non-CMNH members (members: $4 in advance or $6 at the door), which grants entry to both museums, including the CMNH's "Traveling the Silk Road: Ancient Pathway to the Modern World" exhibition and the CMA's new "Yoga: The Art of Transformation" exhibition.
