Remember the Pines, musical premiere, opening October 3rd at Shore Cultural Centre

Northeast Ohio playwright Brian Smallwood and composer Nicholas Underhill have teamed together on an original musical which premieres at Shore Cultural Centre in October. Remember the Pines loosely follows the novel Germinal by Emile Zola and some family history of Brian Smallwood. Bluegrass, gospel, and other appropriate musical styles, bring the story of class struggles in a 1940 West Virginia mining town to life.

Brian Smallwood is an award winning play and poetry writer, and has been working on Remember the Pines since 2001. He is the recent winner of a poetry competition presented by the Underground Railroad Memorial Association. The winning poem “The Promised Land” is now showcased at the foot of the Underground Railroad Memorial Station 100 in Lorain, Ohio.

Composer and pianist Nicholas Underhill studied composition at Hampshire College, Amherst College, and the New England Conservatory of Music. He has been commissioned by the Cleveland Orchestra, the Gramercy Trio, and the Ohio Music Teachers Association, to name a few. Mr. Underhill currently teaches composition and other music courses at Cleveland State University.

Remember the Pines, directed by Maryann Nagel, is about 90 percent sung. The songs are orchestrated with a 12 player ensemble conducted by Cleveland composer Ty Alan Emerson. Included in the band are Appalachian instruments mandolin, banjo, guitar, fiddle and bases, complimented by classical strings, woodwinds and brass. The role of Luther will be sung by Andrew Lipian.

Set and lights are by Trad Burns, and choreography by Martin Cespedes.

Remember the Pines performances run October 3 through the 12th at the Shore Cultural Centre, 291 E. 222nd Street in Euclid. Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm.
