OLGA, 20s-30s female, The oldest sister in the orphaned family, Olga

works for a school and, by the end of the play, finds herself meeting her
unwanted fate: becoming headmistress.

MASHA, 20s-early 30s female, The middle sister of this family, Masha has
become bitter and bored with her marriage to the older Kulygin. She falls
in love with Vershinin, a new colonel recently arrived to the local
military, but inevitably remains with her husband.

IRINA - CAST

VERSHININ, early 40s male, a battery commander from Moscow who knew the
sisters when they were young. He and Masha have an instant connection and
subsequent affair in conflict with his marriage to a suicidal wife and two
children. Philosophical and candid.

NATASHA, late 20s-early 30s, female, the voice of the outsider, not able to
fit into the family. Natasha grows bolder over time as the new matriarch of
the family property, manipulating her environment to her advantage and in
favor of her children. Her marriage to Andrey quickly becomes
dispassionate, and she soon has an affair with one of Andrei's colleagues –
the head of the District Council.

ANDREI, 30s male, The brother in the family, he is somewhat out of the
loop. He aspired to be a professor but ended up being a member of the
county council. He is often deceived by his wife and sadly realizes this.
He finds himself unable to escape his situation and develops a gambling
problem. Much to his shame, he ends up mortgaging the house without the
sisters’ permission.

KULYGIN, 40s-50s male, A master at the local high school, Kulygin is
diffident, socially inept, but good-hearted. He is married to Masha and
praises her integrity throughout the play. He is conscious of her affair
with Vershinin, but behaves as if he sympathizes.

TUZENBACH, 20s-30s, male, A nobleman and Lieutenant in the Army, Tuzenbach
is warm, loyal and honest. He philosophizes like Vershinin, and quits the
army to become a worker and marry Irina who has agreed to marry him with
hesitation. He will defend his honor when required.

SOLYONY, 20s-30s male, A contemporary of Tuzenbach, he is a Captain in the
army, though he embodies many quirky and sadistic qualities. He's jealous
and socially awkward. He shows off, embarrasses himself, and makes others
uncomfortable. A dueler, he defends his unrequited love for Irina to the
death.

CHEBUTYKIN - CAST

FEDOTIK, 20s-30s male, A second Lieutenant in the army, Fedotik has a
special relationship with Irina. He brings her little gifts, which she
obviously loves even though she protests they are childish. He enjoys the
family’s company.

RODHE, 20s-40s male, A second Lieutenant in the army, Rodhe is good friends
with Fedotik and is a welcome and frequent guest at the Prozorov house.

FERAPONT, 60s-70s male, An old man who works for the council, Ferapont is
