for the production of

No AEA contracts avaliable for this production.

AUDITION PREPARATION
Please prepare 2 contrasting monologues no more than 2 minutes each. All will be asked to
do a cold reading from the script. Please bring Head shot and Resume’ - if available, and also
bring a list of any known conflicts beginning November 24, to auditions. Conflicts made after
casting may result in re-casting.

LOCATION 2355 east 89th Street, Cleveland Ohio

ABOUT THE PLAY
Joe Turner’s Come and Gone is the second in a series of August Wilson’s Th e Century Cycle,
which chronicled the struggles and lives of African Americans in the 20th century. Joe
Turner’s Come and Gone is set in the second decade of the 20th century and chronicles the
lives of a few freed former enslaved African Americans in the North. Deals with the conflicts of racism and discrimination.


CAST OF CHARACTERS

Mattie Campbell -A young girl mourning the lover who walked out on her calling her cursed because
their babies died.

Martha Pentecost -Herald’s estranged wife.

Bertha Holly -Five years her husband Seth’s junior. She has been married to him for over twenty-fi ve
years and has learned how to negotiate around Seth’s apparent orneriness. She is an exuberant mothering
woman.

Reuben Mercer -Bertha and Seth’s young son, he becomes best friends with Zonia.

Bynum Walker -A “Rootworker,” one who practices unconventional spiritual worship. He lives in
the boarding house and tells a story of a shiny man who has the secret of life. Th is secret that he refers
to, the secret of life, symbolizes the meaning of all in existence and most importantly the knowledge
of self.

Herald Loomis -Aft er spending 7 years in a chain gang, Herald arrives at a Pittsburgh boarding
house with his young daughter. He is in search of his wife who, while he was in the chain gang, left
their daughter to her mother and disappeared.

Zonia Loomis -Herald’s young daughter. She becomes Bertha’s helper at the house.
Jeremy Furlow -A womanizing teenager.

Rutherford Selig -Th e only white character in the play. He used to fi nd runaway slaves; now he fi nds
Negroes for Negroes. Herald hires him to fi nd Martha.

Molly Cunningham -One of Seth’s tenants who desires nothing more than to be independent. She is
Jeremy’s equivalent.

Seth Holly -Is in his early fi ft ies. Born of northern free parents, he is a skilled craft sman and owner
of the boarding house. He has a stability that none of the other characters have. He is perennially
suspicious and self-righteous.

REHEARSALS
Consists of a 6 week rehearsal schedule, 3-6 time per week. Th e cast will receive
a Rehearsal schedule by the first cast meeting or first rehearsal.
