Winner of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Best Play, Driving Miss Daisy is a classic period piece with a small cast (1 woman, 2 men), clearly intended for minimalist production to showcase the story of an unlikely friendship and the talents of three actors who take on this wonderful and creative task. The relationships are depicted over a 25 year span (1948-73) so the actors should age as the play unfolds without the use of much more than their talents.

Daisy Werthan - Caucasian Female - We see her age from 72 to 97. A high energy, feisty yet gracious southern bell. She is Jewish, widowed and lives alone. She has a house keeper but has always been independent and is accustomed to being in charge. She is progressive but with some deeply imbedded societal notions. She has an adult son.

Hoke Coleburn, Her Chauffeur - African American Male - We see him age from 60 to 85. A true gentleman, he knows how southern life and society in 1948 works. He is respectful toward his employers but requires and deserves their respect in return. He has been out of work for nearly a year. Gracious as well - even in desperation, he is an intelligent man - far beyond his education or experience. He has an uncommon level of compassion.

Boolie Werthan, Her Son. Caucasian Male - We see him age from 40 to 65. Now running the family business and married to a woman (Florine) with less grace but more ambition - he tries to take great care of his Momma, but she does not make it easy for him. He has learned the game of passive disobedience from his father and it serves him well as his Momma denies her growing need for assistance. He is, above all - a business man.
