AN AFTERNOON WITH AUSTIN PENDLETON

Austin Pendleton is one of the screen's foremost character actors, with almost 150 movie and TV credits to his name. He has had many memorable supporting roles during his 50+ year film career-from Max in The Muppet Movie and stuttering defense attorney John Gibbons in My Cousin Vinny to Gurgle in Finding Nemo and William Giles in Oz-and has worked with such directors as Orson Welles, Steven Spielberg, Billy Wilder, Alan Pakula, Otto Preminger, Barbra Streisand, and Mike Nichols, to name just a few. But Pendleton's greatest achievements are on the stage, where he has been a hardworking actor (he originated the role of Motel in Fiddler on the Roof in 1964), a Tony- and Obie-nominated director, an influential teacher, and a respected playwright. Born in Warren, Ohio, this marvelous multi-hyphenate (who seems to have worked with everybody) will answer audience questions about his life and career after a screening of the 20-min. film Starring Austin Pendleton (USA, 2016). This clip-filled short, co-directed by Gene Gallerno and David H. Holmes, captures actors from Meryl Streep and Natalie Portman to Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman singing Pendleton's praises. Total approx. 2 hrs. Special event pricing $15; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $12. No passes, twofers, or radio winners. Austin Pendleton will be starring in the Beck Center's production of Glengarry Glen Ross from 9/13 through 10/6. Individuals presenting a ticket to (or ticket stub from) that show will also pay only $12 to this event. Special thanks to Satomi Blair, 4Hawk Productions.

Film Classics in 35mm!

Starring Austin Pendleton

WHAT'S UP, DOC?

USA, 1972, Peter Bogdanovich

Actor Austin Pendleton, who appears in person at the Cinematheque this Saturday at 2:00 pm, gives one of his most memorable screen performances in this classic farce inspired by Bringing Up Baby and other great screwball comedies of the 1930s. Barbra Streisand, Ryan O'Neal, and Madeline Kahn star in Peter Bogdanovich's frantic follow-up to his The Last Picture Show, about four identical overnight bags that cause endless confusion and complications for their assorted owners when they converge at the same San Francisco hotel. 94 min. Special event pricing $12; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $9. No passes, twofers, or radio winners.

Friday, September 20, at 7:00 pm

Starring Austin Pendleton

MY COUSIN VINNY

USA, 1992, Jonathan Lynn

Stuttering defense attorney John Gibbons is one of Austin Pendleton's most indelible roles, and it's contained in this classic courtroom comedy that won an Oscar for co-star Marisa Tomei. The movie focuses on two NY college boys who, while traveling through the Deep South, are falsely accused of murder. One of them summons a relative, an erratic Brooklynite who just passed the bar exam after six tries (Joe Pesci), to come to Alabama and defend them. With Fred Gwynne. DCP. 119 min. Austin Pendleton appears in person at the Cinematheque on 9/21 at 2:00 pm.

Saturday, September 21, at 12:00 noon

Starring Austin Pendleton

SIMON

USA, 1980, Marshall Brickman

Austin Pendleton (see next blurb) has one of his rare lead movie roles in this largely forgotten satirical comedy co-written and directed by the Oscar-winning co-writer of Woody Allen's Annie Hall, Manhattan, and Sleeper. It's an inventive and peculiar movie in which a group of mischievous, nutzoid think-tank scientists convinces a psychology professor (Alan Arkin) that he is an extraterrestrial being. Soon the rest of the world also believes it. With Madeline Kahn, William Finley, Wallace Shawn, Adolph Green, and Fred Gwynne. DVD. 97 min.
