*Show Synopsis:*
In The 39 Steps, a man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent
who says she’s a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a
mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in
a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale!

*Character Breakdowns:*
Richard Hannay - (Male, Mid 20s - 40s) Having just returned to England
after serving as an intelligence officer in the Boer war, Hannay finds life
in London dull and tiring. Although Hannay describes himself as ordinary,
he is the typical English gentleman hero – well educated, rich, strong,
dashing and suave, looking for fun and adventure. He is described by others
as thirty-seven years old, attractive with a pencil moustache. Later when
on the run he is described as, “slightly more rugged-looking, which makes
him look even better looking than he did before.” Looking for a quiet night
at the theatre, he is thrust into the world of espionage and he feels it is
his duty to put his country’s interest before his own safety. He is the
hapless hero of the play, wrongly accused of murder and pursued by the
authorities through a series of highly improbable adventures. Role requires
strong British dialect work.

Annabella Schmidt/Pamela/Margaret - (Female, Mid 20s - 40s) The roles of
Annabella, Pamela, and Margaret are played by the same actor throughout the
production. Anabella is the beautiful, mysterious German woman Richard
meets at a London theatre. She tells him she is a spy and gives him clues
to a mystery before her untimely and suspicious death. Pamela is met by
Richard on a train to Scotland, as he is pursued by the police. They meet
again at a rally - each encounter, however, she gives him up to the
authorities believing him to be dangerous. However, when she finds herself
reluctantly hand-cuffed to our hero, her tune changes and she tries to help
him. Finally, Margaret is the wife of a Scottish farmer who invites Richard
into their home. She flirts with him through the night, enraging her
husband, and helps Richard continue to avoid the police. Role will require
strong German, British, and Scottish dialect work.

The Clowns - (M/F, Various) The two clowns serve as the rest of the 150+
characters in the show. To attempt to list them all here would be folly;
strong and varying dialect skills and even stronger comedic chemistry are
required. The clowns are not limited by gender or age (both as characters
and performers, to clarify); however, a quick step and strong arm are
helpful, as there are many instances where the clowns may have to double as
our fourth-wall-shattering stage crew.
