*GUM-DIP THEATRE PRESENTS NEW PLAY ABOUT CULTURAL BROKERING*

*Brokers Without Borders is a multiethnic former refugee ensemble; first
part will be presented November 12 - 21, 2021*

*Akron, OH (October 11, 2021)* – Next month, Gum-Dip Theatre is presenting
“Brokers Without Borders,” a new play that features a multiethnic,
theatrical ensemble of former refugees who identify as cultural brokers,
meaning that they act as a bridge between their own culture and another by
translating and interpreting regularly for their family and community
members.

The play runs November 12-13 at 7:00pm, and November 14 at 2:00 pm;
November 19-20 at 7:00 pm, and November 21 at 2:00 pm at The Balch Street
Theater (220 S. Balch St Akron, OH 44302). Tickets can be purchased for $15
at www.catac-akron.com/brokerswithoutborders, or at the door at a
PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN rate.

“Brokers Without Borders” follows the personal experiences of three former
refugees from the Bhutanese, Karen, and Congolese communities who bear the
responsibility of their families in addition to their own challenges.

This cross-cultural original play demonstrates the experience of navigating
an entirely new world and the celebrations of finding success in a
globalized community.

The idea for “Brokers Without Borders” continues to build on the
multicultural theatre work by Gum-Dip Theatre which centers and highlights
historically excluded voices. The performance is devised by Neema Bal, Hsa
Win, Samantha Byake, and Katie Beck.

After each performance, there will be a short creative response process
where audience members and artists will engage in structured dialogue about
the work. This performance is part one of a multi-year project that will
continue to build coalition through original performances with immigrants.

All audience members are required to wear a mask and have their temperature
checked at the door. There will be limited, socially distanced seating.

This project is sponsored by Akron Community Foundation and Ohio Arts
Council.
