Upcoming Drama Therapy opportunities for Northeast Ohio:

Self-Revelatory Performance Group

Due to continuing COVID concerns, this group will meet outdoors two hours weekly starting in Spring once the weather warms for all participants' safety.

Participants will work together using different creative arts activities (group process, improvisation, structured therapeutic theatre games, creative writing, and parts exploration) to allow participants to discover a current topic of relevance. Each participant will utilize this group and individual process to create a 10 minute, self-written and performed piece that bridges theatrical expression with healing, therapeutically working through current issues. The facilitator will work individually and with the group to help participants collaboratively unravel layers until they arrive at what is most essential, and discover where and how healing might organically emerge (Emunah, 2020).

From its creator, Renee Emunah, “Self-rev is similar to auto-biographical theatre, but with two clear distinctions. In Self-Rev (1) There is an unambiguous attempt to “work through” the presented material. Autobiographical theatre, on the other hand, involves dramatic storytelling or dramatization of personal life material, but without a conscious aim of healing or transforming this material. (2) The performer focuses on current issues or dilemmas, whereas autobiographical theatre mostly revolves around stories or experiences from the past. Self-Rev issues may well stem from the past and pertain to ongoing life themes, but the focus is on how these issues impact the performer’s present life.”

Self-Revs are a deeply moving, creative process. They offer participants "(1) a catalyst towards distilling and exploring core issues, chiseling away at extraneous in service of diving more fully into what is of utmost personal relevance (2) an experience of artistic achievement and mastery (3) a marking point or ritualization of change, growth, or transformation, and (4) an expanding circle of witnesses to one’s story and healing.”

Participants do not need to have a background in psychology, theatre, or be a performer to join this group. Those attending should be 18 years of age or older.
