Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) is hiring *Teaching Artists* for our
nationally recognized Student Theatre Enrichment Program (STEP). This is a
temporary full-time position. Position begins *June 3rd, 2024 and ends no
later than August 9th, 2024.*  The STEP Teaching Artist salary is $600/wk,
and the STEP Tech Assistant role earns between $500-600 per week. Set
salaries are based on a candidate’s experience and range of skills.

*JOB DESCRIPTION*

CPT is hiring Teaching Artists for the Student Theatre Enrichment Project.
This role reports to Artistic and Education Associate, who serves as the
Program Director for STEP. The STEP Teaching Artists are integral in
guiding young artists in the creation of an original performance which
tours throughout the greater Cleveland area. Teaching Artists additionally
support the Technical Director and Associate Technical Director in the
supervision of a group of teenagers (STEP Tech Team) implementing the set
and sound needs for an outdoor touring show, including a basic sound system
and typically, a 16’ x 20’ stage. The STEP Tech Assistant supports 6 hours
of daily instruction in technical theatre skills and assists in supervising
teens while building scenic elements. The position may require some
extended hours but will average 35-40 hours a week. CPT summer programming
will include up-to-date safety precautions for artists, staff, and patrons.

*PROGRAM DESCRIPTION*

CPT’s Student Theatre Enrichment Program (STEP) is an arts-based job
training program that engages Cleveland teens in a powerful, 8-week
intensive (4 weeks for Tech Team students) that focuses on excellence in
performance, play creation, physical theatre, writing, production, and set
design/construction. Students aged 14-19, presenting a wide range of
performance experience, are eligible for participation and earn money while
learning and practicing valuable job skills such as timeliness,
communication, commitment, and teamwork. Under the guidance of CPT artists,
teens develop an original play and then tour it to public greenspaces,
theatres, and community organizations throughout the city of Cleveland.
Since its beginning in 1994, STEP has received multiple awards and
recognitions, including those from the City of Cleveland, The President’s
Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, and the National Endowment for
the Arts. Celebrating 30 years of empowering artmaking, STEP is the
longest-running arts-based, job-training program in Cleveland and has been
utilized as an international model for engaging youth. STEP ensembles,
comprised primarily of Black and Brown artists, see themselves as a
positive and inspirational force and are able to witness their work’s
invaluable impact on the larger Cleveland community. Youth are onsite
approximately 6 hours a day during creation and more while on tour.

*2024 STEP TEaching artist responsibilities include:*

   - Complete week of training (June 3-7, 9am-5pm)
   - Attend work hours (June 10th-August 7th, M-F, 9:30am-5:30pm). Hours
   will shift when on tour (July 25th-August 4th) and are tbd once the
   performance schedule is finalized
   - Following pedagogical practices as set forth by CPT Education
   leadership, creatively co- create curriculum for and instruct youth in
   theatre and arts techniques
   - Assist STEP Director in all areas of program facilitation
   - Implement all notes and directions given by STEP Director
   - Support in the creation and performance of a one-hour devised piece to
   be toured throughout Cleveland
   - Discuss class plans before implementation, alter when asked by STEP
   Program Director and/ or CPT Director of Education
   - Attend pre-and post-session meetings
   - Evaluate students and program
   - Document plans and implementation of programming
   - Purchase materials as needed
   - Properly record expenses according to preset guidelines, as applicable

*2024 STEP TECH INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:*

   - Supporting the implementation of curriculum and assisting during
   instruction around the basics of sound and stage setup
   - Leading and/or assisting in sound and stage setup
   - Supporting the management of a 2-week local tour with teens
   - Driving tour truck (small box truck—no special license required)
   - Basic set construction
   - Collaborating with the full STEP creative team
   - Acting as a strong role model for youth
