THE LAST COMMAND
USA, 1928, Josef von Sternberg
Jeff Rapsis, our favorite New Hampshire-based silent-film accompanist, returns to the Cinematheque to improvise digital synthesizer scores for two mute masterpieces-one by a talented Russian émigré in 1920s Paris, the other about Russian émigrés in 1920s Hollywood. (We've shown neither movie before.) Ménilmontant is an impressionistic, visually sophisticated film poem (without intertitles) about two poor French sisters who are victimized by the same man. Legendary film critic Pauline Kael called it "one of the least known masterpieces of the screen" and regarded it as her all-time favorite movie. Restored DCP. 46 min. Josef von Sternberg's powerful The Last Command stars the great Emil Jannings (The Last Laugh, The Blue Angel) as a Czarist Russian army general exiled in Los Angeles, where he has been reduced to working as a bit player in movies. He lands a part as an extra in a Russian Revolution drama directed by a fellow countryman who was once his enemy (William Powell). Evelyn Brent co-stars. "The first Sternberg masterpiece...The sheer sophistication of Sternberg's visuals makes nearly all current releases look old-fashioned." -Time Out Film Guide. 35mm. 88 min. Special admission $15; members, CIA/CSU I.D. holders, age 25 & under $12; no passes. www.jeffrapsis.com
