MetroHealth Simulation Institute is seeking Standardized Patients (SPs) to act in communication-based scenarios for the inpatient Obstetrics team. Training or experience in health professions, communication, or education is beneficial, but not required. Acting training or experience is useful, but not essential. For more information about SP work, check out this article from the Association of American Medical Colleges<https://www.aamc.org/news/standardized-patients-teach-skills-and-empathy>.
Who: Standardized Patients (SP) for the following roles:
* Patient – Black/African American woman, age 18-40
* Patient’s Partner
* Patient’s Doula
What: The inpatient Obstetrics team is in the process of rolling out a multi-part learning journey to support providers and staff in strengthening their communication skills to enhance respect, inclusivity, and cultural competence to ensure a consistent experience for all our patients. Part of this learning journey includes participation in a multi-disciplinary simulation (will include Obstetrics providers and RNs).
There are two scenarios – one focused on a triage visit in Labor & Delivery and the second focused on an admission to Labor & Delivery. For this program, we are specifically seeking participants that reflect African American mothers to help our teams mitigate health disparities in this patient population and to improve health outcomes among all our patients. The Patient will participate in both scenarios.
When: Several dates throughout October 2024-January 2025
Where: MetroHealth Main Campus, 2500 MetroHealth Drive on Cleveland’s west side.
Why: The goals of this program are to:
* Reduce disparity between Black and White patient experience communication metrics (listen, explain, respect, comfort, input/say in care, recommend hospital, rate hospital).
* Strengthen providers’ and staffs’ interpersonal communication skills to enhance empathy, respect, compassion and cultural competence in patient interactions in the Labor & Delivery and Mother Baby settings.
Pay: $25/hour with guaranteed three hour minimum
