*Logline*: When Indi, a disillusioned fish store employee, crosses paths
with Sparrow—a ten-year-old pirate orphan on a quest for the sea—the
unlikely pair set off on an offbeat suburban adventure that helps them both
reckon with loss, bravery, and the power of connection.
*INDI (late 20s/early 30s) LEAD, **ANY ETHNICITY:* Indi is a bright but
emotionally closed-off marine biology graduate working at a pet fish store
in a Cleveland suburb. Still reeling from the death of her father—whose
battle with alcohol addiction left their relationship strained—Indi hides
behind sarcasm and disinterest. She’s without direction, disconnected from
passion or purpose, and resistant to the responsibilities or relationships
that might force her to feel again. But when a 10 year old girl claiming to
be an orphaned pirate walks into the store, Indi is reluctantly drawn into
a little adventure that chips away at her defenses. Through this unlikely
bond, she begins to confront her grief, rediscover her sense of play, and
reclaim the courage to engage with life, even when it hurts.
*SPARROW (10) - LEAD*, ANY ETHNICITY: Sparrow is an independent,
imaginative kid who claims to be an orphaned pirate on the quest for the
sea. Her elaborate persona is more than a game—it’s a survival strategy.
With an overworked father and an unreliable grandfather as her only
guardians, Sparrow escapes into a world where she’s not a kid with unstable
adults, but a pirate with a plan. Underneath, she’s deeply sensitive and
longing for connection, but too afraid to ask for it directly. Meeting Indi
gives Sparrow the adventure she craves, but also the grownup ally she
didn’t know she needed—one who listens, engages, and ultimately sees her.
*DEBRA (40s/50s) - SUPPORTING, **ANY ETHNICITY*: Debra is the store’s high
energy, over-the-top, chaotic manager, who lacks any sort of fish
knowledge. She sees herself as a mentor, gifting Indi the “keys to the
store” while also rescinding any actual responsibility. Debra is the
embodiment of messy adulthood: well-meaning, delusional, and occasionally
inspiring, not on purpose. Her belief in Indi’s “potential” is clumsy but
sincere, inadvertently pushing Indi into a role she’s reluctant to accept.
Despite her missteps, Debra’s trust in Indi serves as the catalyst that
nudges her into an unexpected adventure and connection.
*SETH (late 20s/early 30s) - SUPPORTING*: Seth is a close friend (and maybe
former flame) of Indi’s. He’s riding a high from the “best party he’s ever
thrown” aka his Bar Mitzvah bash when he was thirteen. He runs an ice cream
stand now, but his greatest gift is showing up for Indi when she needs it
most. Seth’s presence is steady, familiar, and encouraging.
Best,
Jessy Leigh
