FREAK THE MIGHTY Equity Principal Auditions

CPH is seeking Equity Actors for roles in Cleveland Play House and Seattle Rep co-production of Freak the Mighty

Auditions will take place on Monday August 25th from 10:00 AM - 6:30 PM. Please note that this call is only for the show's open Principal Roles
Seeking performers with the ability to portray the following characters.

 Performers anywhere on the disability spectrum (with apparent and / or non apparent disabilities) are strongly encouraged to audition.



Gram – 60 years old, female identifying character, any race. Grandmother to Maxwell Kane and mother to Annie, sweet-natured and caring. Performers who use a walker, cane, or other ambulatory mobility aides are encouraged to audition for this role. Mix/Full Voice C5.

Grim – 60 years old, male identifying character, any race. Grandfather to Maxwell Kane and father to Annie. Nickname is because he wears his “frown upside down”. Performers who use a walker, cane, or other ambulatory mobility aides are encouraged to audition for this role. Full Voice F4.

Gwen Avery – mid-30s, female identifying character, any race. Mother to Kevin “Freak” Avery. Supportive, caring, warm, but naturally worried about her son being accepted by his peers. Mix D5

Kenny “Killer” Kane – early 40’s, male identifying character, any race. Father of Maxwell Kane. Incarcerated for the manslaughter of his wife and Max’s mother, Annie. His name and presence sparks fear in the community.

CPH is seeking Equity Actors for chorus roles in Cleveland Play House and Seattle Rep co-production of Freak the Mighty

Auditions will take place on Tuesday, September 2nd from 11:00 AM - 6:30 PM.

Singer Call

11:00 am – 2:00 pm  - Singing for Singers Who Move (accompanist provided)

2:30 pm – 4:00 pm - Dance Session for Singers who move (combination taught in room)

Dancer Call

4:30 pm – 6:00 pm  - Dance Session for Dancers who sing (combination taught in room)

6:30 pm – 8:30 pm  - Singing for Dancer Who Sing (accompanist provided)

Loretta Lee – mid-30s, female identifying character, any race.  Very caring with a big heart; trapped in a hopeless and unhealthy relationship with Iggy. VOCAL RANGE: Soprano Belt up to Eb5

Blade – late teens, male identifying character, any race. A “bully” to the teen protagonists, Maxwell and Kevin. VOCAL RANGE: Bari-tenor up to A4.

Molly – late teens, female identifying character, any race. Blade’s girlfriend and only a “bully” by association. VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo Belt to Cb5, Mix to F5,

Bones – late teens, male identifying character, any race. Blade’s henchman and a “bully” by association. VOCAL RANGE: Bari-tenor up to A4.

Dr. Spivak/Mrs. Johnson – 30s-50s, female identifying characters, any race. SPIVAK is a medical consultant at the local hospital; MRS. JOHNSON is a neighbor. VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo Belt to C5.

Mr. Donelli/Hospital Guard – 30s-50s, male identifying characters, any race. DONELLI is the school psychologist. VOCAL RANGE: Baritone to F4.

Mrs. Price/Mrs. Meehan/Chantelle – 30s-50s, female identifying characters, any race; PRICE is a neighbor; MEEHAN is a teacher; CHANTELLE is a laundromat worker. VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo Belt to C5.

A CHRISTMAS STORY Youth Auditions
Seeking Young Actors, Ages 8-13,  to appear in the play:

A CHRISTMAS STORY

Written by Philip Grecian | Directed by Jackson Gay

Based on the motion picture written by Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown, and Bob Clark



In-person auditions will be held by appointment only:

 Saturday, September 6, 2025  from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Cleveland Play House will hold auditions for young actors on Saturday, September 6, 2025 for the new and refreshed production of the comedic play, A Christmas Story. Young actors, ages 8-13, will be asked to prepare and memorize a short monologue for their audition. The monologue may be from an age-appropriate play or film. (Selections from a monologue book are acceptable.) Young actors should also be prepared to tell a joke (or two) or recite a funny story.



Rehearsals begin on Tuesday, November 4 and will be held during after school hours and on weekends, Tuesdays through Sundays. During the week of November 25, technical rehearsals for the entire company of actors will be held during school hours. (There will be no rehearsal on Thanksgiving Day, November 27.) Performances of A Christmas Story run November 30 – December 21. All performances will be held at the Allen Theatre, located in the heart of Playhouse Square. (Evening performances run Wednesday through Sunday at 7:30 pm; afternoon matinee performances are on Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 pm; and select morning matinee performances on Wednesdays begin at 10:30 am. Young actors will miss part or all of approximately ten school days for rehearsals and performances.)



Available Roles for Young Actors:

Ralphie – age 9/10, male identifying character, any race. Obsessed with planting the seeds to assure the ultimate Christmas present: a genuine Red Ryder BB gun. Has a wild imagination, is unsure of his feelings for Esther Jane, and is persistent, curious, and dramatic.

Randy – age 7/8, male identifying character, any race. Ralphie’s little brother who has a true fascination with Santa. Ability to focus and to be still a plus.

Flick – age 9/10, male identifying character, any race. One of Ralphie’s best friends. A follower who is easy to pick on. Can’t resist the triple dog dare and gets his tongue stuck to a lamppost. Has a sore arm.

Schwartz – age 9/10, male identifying character, any race. Another of Ralphie’s buddies. He likes trouble. He’s a little more on the ball than Flick and gets him to do things he probably shouldn’t.

Esther Jane – age 9/10, female identifying character, any race. Has a crush on Ralphie. Sweet and likeable. Best friends with Helen.

Helen – age 9/10, female identifying character, any race. Smartest girl in class. Likes to talk politics and gossip. Best friends with Esther Jane.

Scut Farkas – age 12/13, male identifying character, any race. The neighborhood bully with a chicken heart.

Note: This is a paid opportunity. Roles in this production are open to young actors of all races, ethnicities, genders, and abilities. To be cast in this production, young actors must be older than age 8 and younger than age 14 between November 1 and December 24, 2025. (Actors younger than age 8 and older than age 14 are ineligible to audition.) Young actors will be required to miss part or all of in-school instructional hours for some daytime rehearsals and performances.
