Scenic Designer & Carpenter Lutheran West (Rocky River, OH) is seeking a Scenic Designer & Carpenter for the 2026-2027 high school theater season: fall play (November 13th-15th) spring musical (March 18th-21st). Qualified applicants should possess experience in scenic design and construction, strong organizational skills and leadership skills, and the ability to fulfill the responsibilities outlined below. Position Responsibilities The Scenic Designer & Carpenter will: - Collaborate with the director to develop and execute the overall scenic design, visual concept, and stage environment for each production. This begins upon hiring. - Work with the director to establish construction timelines, build schedules and production deadlines. The expected construction and painting timeline is as follows: - Fall play - Construction and painting - September 8th - October 30th - Tech Weeks - October 31st - November 12th (including November 8th) - Spring musical - Construction and painting - January 4th - March 5th - Tech Weeks - March 6th -17th (including March 14th) - Source all needed materials, following a budget determined by the producer. - Lead the safe construction, installation, and maintenance of all scenic elements during build sessions on weekday afternoons, evenings, and Saturdays. - Maintain a safe, organized, and productive work environment throughout the build process. - Supervise and mentor student members and adult volunteers of the construction and paint crews, providing instruction and guidance as needed. - Lead the strike, storage, and organization of scenic elements following each production. - Perform all duties in a manner that supports and reflects the mission and values of Lutheran West. Required Qualifications - Ability to work comfortably at heights of up to 15 feet and lift/carry up to 50 lbs. - Demonstrated knowledge of standard scenic construction methods, materials, and techniques. - Proficiency in the safe operation of common hand and power tools. - Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. - Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment while managing multiple priorities and deadlines. - Flexibility to work weekday afternoons and evenings, Saturdays, and occasional late-night production hours as required. - Successful completion of FBI and BCI fingerprinting and background checks. Accountability The Scenic Designer & Carpenter will report directly to the Director and Drama Program Producer and is expected to maintain consistent communication regarding project progress, scheduling, and production needs.
