Get Hep Swing is the premiere dance company for teaching and performing swing dances from the 1920s through the 1950s. We make learning to partner dance easy and fun. You do not need to bring a dance partner as we rotate partners during the lesson. You can physically push yourself as much or as little as you like during the lessons. D On Monday nights we offer two levels of Lindy, beginner from 7-8 and intermediate from 8-9. Lindy began in the ballrooms of Harlem in the late 1920's/early 1930's. It is a conglomeration of dances that immigrants brought over from their homelands as a response to what was the latest craze in music- Jazz! Lindy is characterized by some of the same things that make Jazz music great; syncopated rhythms, creative improvisation, and call and fancy fundamental moves. You can see examples of Lindy in the movies and TV shows like "Swingers", "A League of Their Own", "Malcolm X", "Swing Kids", "So You Think You Can Dance" and "Dancing With The Stars”. Tuesday nights we offer two levels of Jitterbug, beginner from 7-8 and intermediate from 8-9. Jitterbug is the easiest form of partnered dancing and is also known as East Coast Swing or Swing. We will dance to a variety of styles of music including big band swing, early rock & roll, blues and R&B. You will learn the basic footwork patterns and how to lead and follow a fun mix of spins and turns in open and closed position. Learning to swing dance is a great way to meet people and get some exercise! Tuesday nights we offer two levels of Balboa, beginner from 7-8 and intermediate from 8-9. Balboa and Bal-Swing are dances that originated in the crowded ballrooms of Southern California in the 1930's. The Balboa is loved for its fancy footwork, close connection, finesse and the ability to be done quite easily at all tempos. Balboa is most often done to big band swing from the 1930's. Many people have said that Balboa is the Tango of the Swing world. If you are interested in developing and refining your leading or following abilities, then Balboa is definitely the dance for you! This dance has a lot of torso contact between partners. There is a $10 per person discount available for those who sign up with a dance partner. We define a dance partner as one person assuming the role of leader and one person assuming the role of follower. These roles are not gender specific. Each person signs up individually and uses the code DANCEPARTNER at check out. There is a $30 discount off of the $60 price available for those who are repeating a fundamentals or beginner class.
