And thanks to the magic of high-definition camera work, you can see this production here in Cleveland Heights, at the Cedar Lee Theater, as if you were in the 10th row center. Follies, set in New York, 1971. There’s a party on the stage of the Weismann Theatre. Tomorrow the iconic building will be demolished. Thirty years after their final performance, the Follies girls gather to have a few drinks, sing a few songs and lie about themselves. Tracie Bennett, Janie Dee and Imelda Staunton play the magnificent Follies in this dazzling new production. Featuring a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 21, it’s directed by Dominic Cooke (The Comedy of Errors). With a big cast, Follies isn’t produced as often as perhaps other Sondheim musicals, reason enough to see this one. But it also gives this newsletter the opportunity to highlight the fact that Cleveland Cinemas often brings to the Cedar Lee Theater high-definition video performances from London’s West End, Russia’s Bolshoi Ballet and just recently added, the Metropolitan Opera. Talk about sitting in that 15th row center seat, these theatrical and musical performances are breathtakingly world class.
