*Lakeland Theatre* * is seeking a* *Set and Lighting Designer* *for* *Freaky Friday* Book by *Bridget Carpenter* Music by *Tom Kitt* Lyrics by *Brian Yorkey* Directed by *Martin Friedman* Sound Designed by *Eric Simna * *The Play:* I saw this play at its initial tryout at the Signature Theatre in Washington DC (actually Shirlington, Va.) two years ago with my family. I was bowled over by the changes to this wonderful book (by Richard Rodgers’ daughter Mary Rodgers) and film. Instead of an almost slap-stick story about a mother and daughter exchanging minds and coming to grips with the change of bodies; the new musical instead takes on something more important; body shaming and the trials and tribulations of being a high school student. I found the story down-right profound and the music wonderful. AND PERHAPS MOST IMPORTANTLY, no longer is this a book and movie about a homogeneous family and the school they attend but rather it is about the real world and it features a cast of TRUE DIVERSITY. Based on the beloved 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers features a book by Bridget Carpenter - the co-executive producer and writer on the beloved TV hits, "Friday Night Lights" and "Parenthood" - and music and lyrics by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey - the Pulitzer Prize-winning composers of *Next to Normal* and *If/Then*. *THE SET AND LIGHTING DESIGNER:* Both the SET and LIGHTING DESIGNER will be responsible for collaborating with the director, and indeed all the designers in coming up with a cohesive production concept. *The Set Designer* will work with the Technical Director in constructing the show in a timely manner. There is some dollars to hire a carpenter or two. Less is more and the question of FORM OR FUNCTION is important to answer. He/She will not only help construct (or at least lead) but also help strike the set if possible. *The Lighting Designer* will either hire a Head Electrician or do the hanging her/himself. The lighting is extremely important in this production. Many locations and times of day and night. NOT NECESSARILY realistic. * The Plot: **“When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. Freaky Friday, a new musical based on the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, is a heartfelt, comedic, and unexpectedly emotional update on an American classic. By spending a day in each other's shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another's struggles, learn self-acceptance, and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter.”* *Production and Rehearsal Dates:* *Freaky Friday **will open on Friday, February 1 and run through Sunday, February 17, 2019. There will be nine (9) shows; that is THREE (3) weeks of performances. Rehearsals will begin in early December, late November and will be based upon your schedules.* For more information please feel free to contact me, Martin Friedman at *martinfriedman98@gmail.com <martinfriedman98@gmail.com>* or at *216/233-5441 <216%2F233-5441>*.
