Independence CommunityTheatre closes its current season with “Songs for a New World” “Songsfor a New World” featuresmusic and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown. Ithas been described as an abstract musical, a series of songs connected by themerather than narrative. The rousingscore blends elements of pop, gospel and jazz, featuring tight harmonies anddarling vocals. It is a song cycle that takesthe audience on a journey of life told though passionate, uplifting and soulwrenching music. The audience is transported from the deck of a Spanishsailing ship bound for a new land, to the ledge of a New York penthouse.Characters range from a young man in the Bronx who dreams of becoming a famousbasketball player, to a forlorn and neglected Mrs. Claus lamenting as Christmasapproaches.
