CLEVELAND PUBLIC THEATRE PRESENTS
HONDURAN PERFORMANCE GROUP ¡TEATRO LA FRAGUA! IN
Romero de las Américas
Written by Carlos Morton
October 6 - 7, 2001

Cleveland Public Theatre has added ¡teatro la fragua!, a community based
theatre group from Honduras, to its season for a limited engagement on
October 6th and 7th, 2001. This internationally recognized performing
ensemble is currently touring the Midwest, and will present two performances
of Romero de las Américas, a play by Carlos Morton about Oscar Romero. Both
performances will be held at the Cleveland Public Theatre’s Gordon Square
Theatre, located at 6409 Detroit Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44102. The
performance on Saturday October 6th will be at 8:00 pm; Sunday’s
performance, on October 7th, will be at 6:00 pm. Tickets for both
performances are $15.00; students and seniors are $10.00, and are available
by calling the Cleveland Public Theatre box office at (216) 631-2727. Group
discounts are available.

Romero de las Américas tells the story of the three-year term of Oscar
Romero as Archbishop of San Salvador and his assassination on March 24,
1980. It is a poetic and powerful interpretation of this key event which was
a catalyst to the religious, political and social explosions that shook all
of Central America in the early 1980s. The play insists that Archbishop
Romero is not an historical figure but rather a figure whose spirit must
permeate our present and inspire our future. In Cleveland, the play will be
performed in Spanish with projected English supertitles.

¡teatro la fragua! was founded in the city of Olanchito, Honduras in 1979
by Jack Warner, sj., a Jesuit priest with formal training in theater.
¡teatro! was founded on the belief that in a society which is primarily
illiterate, theater as a medium of basic communication and education can
assume a role of critical importance. ¡teatro! uses the theatrical medium to
educate and empower the people of Honduras to find their own creative
solutions to the challenges they face. Their repetoire promotes social
justice by exploring themes from the social gospel and includes biblical
parables, Mayan folk tales and contemporary Central American theatre. While
¡teatro’s! roots are clearly nourished by the soil of Central America, their
message is a universal one.

The performance on Saturday October 6th will be at 8:00pm; Sunday’s
performance, on October 7th, will be at 6:00pm. Tickets for both
performances are $15.00; students and seniors are $10.00, and are available
by calling the Cleveland Public Theatre box office at (216) 631-2727. Group
discounts are available.
